Nourish’s goal is to create sustainable change as well as have a long-term impact in the spheres of both conservation and community upliftment

Who we are?

Nourish is a non-profit organisation that is based in Mpumalanga and Limpopo provinces of South Africa. We work closely with rural villages and communities as this region is one of the most poverty stricken and under severed areas in the country.

What we do?

Our projects are all interlinked and holistic, in order to help a community grow in all aspects. We focus on early childhood development, food security, english literacy, social integration, environmental education, conservation experiences and entrepreneurial training. The holism of Nourish is important as it works with the community as a whole and sees the problems in a bigger picture.

Where we work?

The Nourish base is located along the Orpen Road next to Sigagule village in Mpumalanga province. We work throughout the schools and communities in the Acornhoek area.

The area is surrounded by stunning wildlife and mountains. We are so fortunate as  Kruger National Park gate is approximately a 10 minutes drive from Nourish. This allows our volunteers the amazing opportunity to visit this beautiful park on the weekends and hopefully catch a glimpse of the majestic big five!

The best part about where we are based is, not only the wildlife and the beautiful sunsets, but how safe the area is. Of course no area is perfect but this region is reasonably safe and we have not had any issues with anyone yet.

In regards to health, this area does have some cases of treatable malaria so we recommend that our volunteers take malaria medication during their time with us. You will not need vaccinations when you come to this region unless you come from an area that has yellow fever. Please check with you doctor before arriving in South Africa as every country is different with their requirements.

Our History

Nourish officially opened in 2011 by Sarah Bergs. Sarah created this amazing project from scratch with little help and somehow was able to create Nourish into what it is today. Sarah created Nourish to be the open door through which many projects can be run that are focused on alleviating waste, hunger, creating livelihoods for people in the local community and finally becoming more 'green' in our way of life.

Nourish is currently going through a massive expansion. With a growing dedicated staff and incoming volunteers we know that Nourish can only go towards helping more and more people in these incredible communities.

Our Mission

Nourish wants to make a difference in both the community and in wildlife conservation. We believe that by working to grow resilient communities that are healthy, educated and have access to opportunities we can break the poverty cycle and thus put an end to the poaching epidemic.

Why Choose Us?

Nourish is just beginning to explore just how much we can make a difference in the lives of the community members and we need as much help as possible in order to help as many people as possible and make a true difference in this area. There are so many aspects to Nourish that there is something for everyone to get involved in and the team at Nourish are truly dedicated to making it the experience of a lifetime! If you are up for a challenge and an adventure this will be the perfect place for you!

Social Impact

What did we achieve so far?

Since Nourish began many successes has come our way.

Our feeding scheme for our children that come to learn in the library and our creche kids has shown tremendous progress in our children. We have noticed our children are able to concentrate more which means they can learn more efficiently as well as have the energy to go outside and play like children should. Our feeding scheme has also allowed us to bring in three grannies to come and cook the food for the children allowing them an opportunity to be more financial independent and continue looking after their families even in their old age.

Our afternoon lessons with primary school children is becoming increasingly effective. We are so proud of all of our library children as every single one of them passed all their exams at the end of last term. This is amazing as it is proving that our children are just going to keep improving and they will have endless opportunities.

Our creche is another area we are thrilled about. The creche was designed in order to give children, whose parents/guardians, could not afford to send them to creche a safe place where they can learn and play. Every single day you come into Nourish and you witness just how much these children are changing and improving is enough to make you smile for the rest of the day.

We have achieved so much in five years that is near to impossible to write it all down. However, we have a very long way to go for Nourish to reach its potential. Nourish has so many people it needs to help and without incredible volunteers we can't help everybody that so desperately needs it.

Because Nourish projects are so extensive and so broad our beneficiaries range from our toddlers in the creche all the way up to our grannies that work in our kitchen. Here at Nourish we believe that everyone deserves to be empowered and thats what we are striving to do in this community.
