Background Information

At Pacheco Community Center, we work toward local development and try to reach sustainability in its three dimensions: environmental, social and economic. We believe that by creating more community experiences, we empower people, youth especially, so they can build their own future and have a better life.

Why is this program important for the community?

The members of the community we work with are families that work hard every day to better their financial situation. They are families that look out for each other and hope to one day be able to sustain their loved ones without worries. This is why Pacheco exists: to establish a foundation for those families who are dreaming of something bigger. Many of the young people from the surrounding neighborhoods have not been able to finish their basic studies and therefore can only dream of going to university. The Pacheco Community Center gives them the opportunity to learn a practical trade, work in a team and be prepare for labor market integration.

We focus on training. We help young people build new capacities by offering a variety of activities such as language courses, music and arts workshops. Not only can they learn about gardening, landscaping and begin an immersion in agroecology philosophy, but also the Pacheco Community Center has a greenhouse for the students to plant fruits and vegetables, which they will be able to sell and generate their own income. Additionally, the students enrolled in the classes have access to many gardening tools so that they don’t have to buy their own.

What can you learn as a volunteer?

The Pacheco Community Center is a place that can provide a different perspective on life. Volunteers will be able to learn about many topics and maximize what they learn by helping us to maintain the garden and grounds. Volunteers will enhance their knowledge in practice, helping in the tasks of daily maintenance of the garden, in the organization of community space with the armed schedule, lists of participants’ management and administration tasks of space. They may provide art workshops, English, school support, orchard and recycling.

How does your work impact on the community?

Volunteers can be a source of motivation for young people who want to strive for a better future. The energy and knowledge that volunteers bring with them can be essential in changing young people’s perspectives. Volunteer can make students believe in a brighter future and instill in them the motivation and aspiration to achieve their goals, no matter how big and regardless of their current socioeconomic status.

Role of the Volunteer

The volunteers that come from different parts of the world to exchange knowledge and experience and to work alongside the community members create a mutual spirit of solidarity. They take part in establishing connections in natural and relaxing surroundings.

Volunteers daily activities with the community:

  • Learn by helping in practical classes with youth to maintain the garden and grounds.
  • Help watering during 20 minutes in the mornings outside the greenhouse if the weather is too dry.
  • Help teachers to prepare didactic material for theoretical classes (like diagrams, pictures, boards)
  • Help social coordinators to manage the organization of community space with the armed schedule, lists of participants’ management and administration tasks of space.
  • Help preparing and attending breakfast or afternoon snack (according daily schedule) for youth.
  • Help preparing special monthly workshops: Open day to the community when families and friends share and afternoon with talks, games and relaxing time.
Most gardening activities take place during the morning, and classes are held in the afternoon. Volunteers will participate in the different activities according to their interests and abilities. Volunteers will work 5 days per week and have 2 days off.

Free Time During Daily Volunteer Activities:

Around the community center is an area where people usually run during afternoon and there are some places where to take gym or yoga classes.

Not far but taking a bus (15 minutes away) the shopping area can be reached;  One of the biggest malls from Argentina (Tortugas Open Mall) where you can find places for eating, cinemas, shows and a good place for shopping everything.

Free Time on Weekends

The Buenos Aires city is not far (1 hour and a half by bus). It good to take a whole day to go there and visit traditional neighborhoods like La Boca, Recoleta , San Telmo  or modern places like Puerto Madero  visiting museums and street markets, too.

Top tourist destination Palermo is the largest and trendiest neighbourhood for sightseeing in Buenos Aires. Palermo is plenty of things to do, both day and night. You can find some of Buenos Aires' best restaurants, trendy designer stores, lively pubs, bars and clubs here. Palermo has various subdivisions including Palermo Soho, aptly named after Soho in New York City, and Palermo Hollywood, where all the TV, radio and film companies have their studios.

The waterfront neighbourhood of Buenos Aires is the most modern part of the city. With towering glass skyscrapers, elegant restaurants and chic nightclubs, Puerto Madero is enjoyed by the wealthy and the trendy.

The oldest residential neighbourhood in Buenos Aires, San Telmo exudes a special historical vibe. As one of the most important centres during the 19th century, San Telmo has preserved many of Buenos Aires’ architectural landmarks, museums, antique shops and old churches that nowadays serve as a backdrop for business, cultural events and day to day activities.

A wonderfully colourful neighbourhood right next to the old port of Buenos Aires, La Boca is synonymous with both tango and football. With its multi-coloured houses and taverns, the neighbourhood maintains its tango tradition, football passion, and Italian roots.

Social Hints, Customs:

Cafes are a part of everyday Argentine life both for the residents of Buenos Aires as well as those from other regions. It is like a second home where people meet over a steaming cup of coffee with friends, acquaintances, clients or themselves...

Mate is THE traditional beverage of Argentina. For Argentineans, “los mates” are a fundamental part of life. Mate is a strong, caffeinated tea drank from a cup about the size of an apple. The cup is filled with an herb (yerba) and hot water and then drank through a metal straw called “bombilla” that has a filter on its end.
