Our teaching placements take place in Migori County, Western Kenya. Volunteers can choose between School-Level Placements, Adult Education, and Classroom Construction

Education Interns have the opportunity to select a teaching placement based on their experience and interests. We offer School-Level Placements and Adult Education Placements. Applicants do not necessarily need to have a teaching background, just a keen interest in education and outreach as well as a university or high school degree. However, some public speaking or communication experience will be advantageous to you.
1. School-Level Placements
As an Education Intern in schools, you will work with the local teaching staff to learn about the local school system and to develop a curriculum for your time in Kenya. Your role will be to deliver engaging lessons to the students, based on the chosen topics assessed by the teachers. These may be health-related or environment related and are supplemental to lessons taught in the Kenyan curriculum. Our previous education interns have found this experience to be a mutual learning experience, and you will learn valuable classroom management skills while making great memories with students in Migori County.
2. Adult Education Placements
Many adults in Kenya's rural population have been unable to complete their secondary school education, with 21% in this area having completed secondary school.
Rieko is looking for skilled volunteers to conduct skills-building education programs for adults in Migori County. These skills are intended to improve livelihoods and provide the volunteer with strong connections to the community.
Unlike other programs, we invite our volunteers to create the syllabus and deliver lessons as they see fit. Skills programs we are looking to pilot include:
- Computer & ICT
- Entrepreneurship & business management
- Adult literacy
- Adults with disabilities
- Health education
- English language
Tagesablauf
Depending on your chosen placement area, your day to day activities will vary. For all placements, you will typically work Monday to Friday, and have weekends at your own leisure. Rieko Kenya is happy to assist organizing day trips and excursions to the beautiful surrounding natural areas.
Freizeitaktivitäten
Migori County has beautiful natural areas, with the shores of Lake Victoria close by and many natural hikes in the region. Travel to neighbouring areas of Kenya, some of Kenya's many national parks, or to our beaches can be easily coordinated. These make for great weekend excursions. We are happy to discuss more of these with you.

For School-Level Volunteering, a background in teaching is not necessarily required, so long as you have a passion and interest in youth programming. Some experience with public speaking or communication will be assistive to your time in the classroom.
For Adult Education and Vocational training, we recommend applicants have extensive experience with the skill they aspire to teach in Kenya. We will be happy to discuss this further with you and provide support for syllabus development.

Our Fees Include Transport (local transfers), food, accommodation, orientation, local 24hour support, and integration into the project.
Our fees do not include flights, vaccinations, insurance, or visa costs. Rieko Kenya will provide support through the Visa application process as required.
Usually from Kisumu is the most convenient option.
For those arriving at the International Airport in Nairobi, we advise that our volunteers fly to Kisumu where we can arrange for pickup. We can equally assist arranging for transport to Migori from Nairobi by road for our volunteers should they prefer this option.
We offer several different accommodation options according to your preferences. Prices are indicated based on staying with a host family, however, a shared volunteer house and hotel options are also available.

Authentic Kenyan cuisine is included for our volunteers staying with a host family or in a hotel. For those staying in a shared volunteer house, kitchen amenities are also available for volunteers to prepare their own food.

Der nächstgelegene Flughafen ist Kisumu Airport (KIS) in Kisumu. Wir helfen dir günstige Flüge nach Kenia zu finden.
Ins Ausland zu gehen ist ein Abenteuer, auf das man sich stets gut vorbereiten sollte. Plötzliche Krankheit oder Verletzung, Stornierung oder Diebstahl - eine Reiseversicherung für Kenia bietet die nötige Sicherheit.
Bevor du deine Freiwilligenarbeit in Kenia antrittst, solltest du dich noch einmal von deinem Arzt beraten lassen und deine erforderlichen Impfungen für Kenia überprüfen.
