The Lifetime Projects team in Colombia supports local grassroot organizations and co-develops projects in the field of children, interculturality and the environment.
Vivac’t-LifeTime Projects Colombia has begun new activities in the small community of La Piche.
The community of La Piche is a small, isolated village located about an hour from the Caribbean coast in the Montes de Maria at the foot of the Roca Madre Natural Park. The inhabitants live mainly from mining and agriculture. Thanks to the presence of the Roca Madre Eco-Park, some national tourists pass through La Piche, but tourism is not developed in the village. Today, the community wants to open up more to the outside world and develop activities related to tourism. In this context, the inhabitants have shown a strong interest in learning - themselves and their children - foreign languages, in particular English. At the same time, a challenge for the community of La Piche is to preserve their native Zenu language before it disappears.
The Roca Madre Foundation is also developing a programme of activities for young people (languages, sports, music, environmental education).
Thanks to our partnership with the Roca Madre Foundation, Vivac't-LifeTime Projects Colombia is developing its activities in the community of La Piche in order to respond to the strong motivation of the inhabitants to learn foreign languages. It is also about creating exchanges between different cultures through the presence of international volunteers in an isolated community. Furthermore, by being present in both Rincon del Mar (an Afro-descendant village on the Caribbean coast) and La Piche (an indigenous village inland), we are helping to develop links between two communities that are both neighbors and very different in terms of culture and environment.
Presentation of the mission
Your main task will be to prepare and run language workshops (English and French) for the children of the community of La Piche. You will also participate in the creation of a Zenu language dictionary with the elderly to ensure the transmission of the native language to future generations. You may also be asked to support other cultural workshops set up by the Roca Madre Foundation. You will work at La Piche 3 days a week.
