The program

Experiencing the Great Barrier Reef is a bucket-list item for many - combine this with marine conservation activities and you have a volunteering program like no other! This amazing Dive (or snorkel) program allows budding marine conservation volunteers to learn or improve their skill through a well-renowned dive operator while also participating in a credible reef monitoring program. With a high commitment to environmental protection and sustainability, this unique dive program falls under the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority’s monitoring program, ‘Eye on the Reef’, and is designed for volunteers interested in scuba diving, marine conservation and spending time in this incredible marine park. From learning to dive, advancing your dive skills or participating as a snorkeler, all volunteers will spend time with reef experts to monitor the reef and its marine inhabitants for the Marine Park’s conservation program. Volunteers will find this to be an amazing learning and conservation experience. For those with a passion for marine conservation this program promises to deliver a life changing experience.

Goals of this Project:

  • Protect Australia’s amazing Great Barrier Reef
  • Provide information to researchers and conservation authorities to help preserve marine life
  • Raise awareness of the conservation issues of the Reef and teach people how to love, respect and preserve the marine environment
  • Enable inter-cultural exchange between all parties and teach international visitors more about marine conservation and Australia

How you can help

Volunteers on this exciting program help by supplying information to assist in preserving this amazing environment. The adventure begins in Cairns, the gateway to the Great Barrier Reef, where participants can opt to become a certified scuba diver by completing the popular PADI Open Water Dive course.  Advanced Open Water, Rescue and Nitrox courses are available for participants already certified. Contact Love Volunteers for more info.

Volunteers then embark upon the reef as certified divers and volunteer marine conservationists and complete underwater Rapid Monitoring surveys to monitor coral health. The information gathered provides managers and researchers with up-to-date information on reef health status and trends, the distribution of protected and iconic species and early warnings of environmental impacts. Volunteers will also have the unique opportunity to spend time with a variety of reef experts on the Great Barrier Reef, to learn and experience first-hand the endangered natural wonderland of the Great Barrier Reef.

Volunteers can expect to undertake the following:

  • Certified scuba diving course
  • Become a volunteer marine conservationist
  • Complete underwater rapid monitoring surveys
  • Complete coral watch fish identification surveys and coral health monitoring
  • Help with turtle identification, benthos transects, marine debris beach clean-ups and debris sorting and categorising
  • Spend time with reef experts learning more about the environment

About Us

Love Volunteers has been placing volunteers around the world for over seven years. We're passionate about making a difference in developing communities.

Our History

  • June 2009: Julian and Kelly (a brother and sister team from New Zealand) were shocked by the huge fees charged for volunteering abroad. They knew there must be a better way!
  • July 2009: Eager to provide transparent and cost effective volunteering, work began on what would become Love Volunteer.
  • August 2009: Visting worthy projects and developing relationshsips with local charities begins. A voyage that would see the duo cover half the globe in six months.
  • January 2010: The Love Volunteers website is launched with just 20 projects across 12 countries.
  • March 2010: Our first volunteer, Daniel, joins us on a project in Ethiopia! The first of many thousands to follow!
  • May 2010: Within months, Love Volunteers is placing over 50 volunteers a month
  • January 2011: We work with our first student group, sending Tim and 30 of his medical students from Columbia University to Guatemala.
  • May 2011: Our 1,000th volunteer, Emily, joins the team in Vietnam
  • February 2012: We begin working with our partner in Zambia - country number 30.
  • May 2013: We're recognized as one of the top volunteering organizations in the world.
  • July 2014: We add our 100th project - in Costa Rica.
  • October 2015: Kelly and Mike spend 18 months visiting projects throughout Central & South America, Europe and Asia.
  • February 2016: Nicole joins the team as our volunteer support manager. Later, Karen also comes on board.
  • June 2017: We undertake a huge rebrand of Love Volunteers to better reflect our mission of serving local communities in developing countries.

2023 at Great Barrier Reef Conservation Experience

Erg leuk programma, snorkelen op de eilanden was erg leuk. Erg goed verzorgd door de coordinatoren. Wel jammer dat het water erg koud was (juli), dus het snorkelen kon je niet lang volhouden. ..

2023 at Marine Conservation Supporter

I applied for the Marine Conservation program and wanted to stay for two weeks - I left early as this whole thing was more or less a scam. The location is not a "short journey from the beach" and not where the map shows but way further inland. We had bad/no wifi, our showers were not working ...

The staff were very helpful for suggesting places to visit on the weekends and I had a great time with the other volunteers. I would definitely do ...

2023 at Community Initiatives

Made very welcome by the community programme that I worked with. It was about a 20 minute bus journey away but the buses are very regular and inexpensive. The hostel was great and being in New Orleans for Mardi Gras was amazing. Beware, though, food and drinks can be expensive (compared to what I'm ...

2023 at Empowering local women

I did one week of volunteering at the women's empowerment project. The women were amazing, just as the managers of the project. The overall experience was very rewarding. However, I have two things I liked less: there is no structure in the curriculum. This means that I thought several lessons, but ...
