Our volunteer programs are based both in Juba working with Impact Health Organization (IHO) which is well experienced in service providing in South Sudan. 

Every day, about 250 children die from diarrhea diseases in South Sudan – many of these deaths would be preventable through good hygiene practices like washing hands after using the toilet or using a latrine instead of open defecation. 

The volunteers will enhance their skills in the area of Nutrition, Health and Water sanitation and hygiene. 

Dirty water and poor sanitation is a major problem in Juba in South Sudan, where 50 per cent of the population does not have access to sanitation. This has led to recurrent cholera outbreaks in many parts of the country.

Our volunteer programs are based both in Juba working with Impact Health Organization (IHO) which is well experienced in service providing in South Sudan. 

The Volunteers will   learn more about South Sudan cultures including food, language, and will be involved in the following.

Nutrition Program

1- Support in the implement the OTP and TSFP using the new South Sudan CMAM guidelines 
2- Coordinate with nutrition assistants,local community nutrition volunteers and community support groups to ensure proper implementation of Nutrition activities. 
3- Ensure home visit and follow up for special need infants and mothers.
4- Undertake community initiatives to prepare ready to use foods using local materials and technologies. 
5-To promote positive Infant and Young Child Feeding Practices in the community
6- Support women groups in the community to start nutrition promotion and income generating activities.
7. Ensure integration of health, WASH, HIV/AIDS, PSS e.t.c. in Nutrition activities. 
8- Ensuring that all nutrition planned activities are implemented as per the implementation plan
9- Hold regular meetings with implementing team and carry out evaluations (where necessary) of the project
10- Ensure proper management of project finances. 
11- Training and mentoring nutrition assistants/counsellor and CNVs on following the CMAM guidelines.
12- Promote Counselling mothers with special needs on matters related to breastfeeding and child care.
13- Educate the child caregivers on the food preparation procedure through food demonstration.
14- Educate mothers on the importance of giving the therapeutic food to the malnourished child only and in the right quantities per day. 
15- Promote relationship between IHO, partners and County Authorities

Undertake any other activities as directed by the supervisor.

The Volunteers will   learn more about South Sudan cultures including food, language, etc. volunteer programs are based both in Juba working with Impact Health Organization (IHO) which is well experienced in service providing in South Sudan. 

We provide our volunteers with cultural training and orientation on arrival. This includes things like learning how to use local buses, advice on living and working in an Islamic country.  Security isn’t a significant issue.  The Sudanese are a very hospitable and friendly people; they welcome and appreciate the presence and work of our volunteers. At the same time it can be a challenging country. We look for volunteers who can be self reliant and adaptable, perhaps they have already done some travelling.

Our volunteers make a difference every day, contributing their expertise and experience to add value to the organization in different functional areas. 

Tagesablauf

First Day: On your first day of volunteering, you will be escorted to your placement by a local coordinator and introduced to the placement staff you will be working with.

Weekdays: Volunteers work for approximately 3 to 5 hours per day. A typical schedule is as follows:

7.00 AM – Breakfast at the volunteer house, prepared by the local cook.

7.30 AM – Volunteers travel to their placements either by 4 x 4 project car or by domestic flight if project is far.. Start time and daily workload depends on the project that the individual volunteer is participating on.

1.00 PM – Volunteers break for lunch. Volunteers either travel back to the volunteer house or eat a packed lunch at their placement. After lunch, volunteers continue with their volunteer work (where applicable).

3.00 PM - 4.00 PM – Work at the placement usually ends. Volunteers are free to return to the volunteer house, plan for the following day’s activities or use their free time as they wish.

7.00 PM – Dinner at the hotel, prepared by a local cook.

Please note, this schedule will vary depending on the particular project the volunteer is participating on.

Orientation is hosted by our local team at the volunteer base in Juba. Orientation begins on the morning of your chosen start date and covers everything you need to know for your volunteer program in Juba– Introduction to Juba, Culture and Customs, Rules and Expectations, Safety, Language Basics, Travel Opportunities, Introduction to Project and Placement. The orientation will also give you a chance to meet other volunteers and swap contact details for weekend travel and socializing.
Unterkunft

Volunteers are accommodated in​ ​a hotel in the Juba area. The volunteer house​ ​​is​ ​safe and secure in a quiet​ ​area. The bathrooms have western toilets and showers. There is electricity and running water in the hotel.There are staff who clean the accommodation throughout the week, however volunteers are required to keep their rooms and common areas tidy.

Volunteers are provided with three meals per day (breakfast, lunch and dinner), prepared by an on-site local cook. If you wish to snack or eat outside of meal times, this will be at your own cost and there are local shops within the villages where you can purchase snacks. 

Breakfast generally includes tea, eggs, bread and fruit. For lunch and dinner, there is a revolving menu of local dishes, which include typical stews (beef, chicken, pork, goat, fish and vegetable), beans, rice, chapatti, groundnuts and vegetables. Starchy foods such as white bread, white rice, pasta, potatoes, sweet potatoes, matoke (boiled green bananas), and cassava are dietary staples. The tropical climate of Juba also contributes to a healthy choice of seasonal fruits, including bananas, watermelon, papayas, mangos, jackfruit, and pineapples. Bottled drinking water is readily available in Juba and volunteers should budget approximately $5 per week for this.
