As a volunteer in a children's home, you will assist kids in learning fundamental life-skills that are usually taught by their parents. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Alter 18+
Alleinreisend
Pärchen
Familien
Gruppen
50+
Rollstuhlfahrer

As a care volunteer working with children in orphanages, you would be helping the kids to learn life-skills that parents would normally teach. By getting involved in the day-to-day running of an orphanage - making sure children are fed, washed and dressed, and paying them personal attention you will be making a really positive impact on their lives. There is always scope for any talents or interests you may have to be utilized. Art & crafts or music are always popular activities and many care placements have outside areas where sports and games can be played. Many volunteers also help to educate the children in personal hygiene and social skills.

Opportunities exist in some orphanages for our volunteers to be more involved in the ‘teaching’ or ‘medical’ side of care work. You may spend your afternoon helping the older children with their homework on their return from school, or if you have the relevant skills you can administer first aid to any children in need. The work volunteers do can be challenging at times but the strength and resilience of the children will inspire you to persevere.

Your day may start early to help get the children up and give them breakfast, however, you will probably finish early too or have several hours off at lunchtime before returning to play with the children in the afternoon. Many volunteers like to take some of the children out on a trip from time to time. An afternoon at the beach or walking around the market can be a revelation for some of the children, who rarely get the chance to travel more than a few miles away from their homes.

Tagesablauf

As a VolunteerMatch Ghana volunteer, you’ll find yourself having a new adventure every day! You’ll start your day at the VMG Home-Base, with a delicious home-cooked breakfast. After breakfast, you’ll take off with your fellow volunteers to give back at your VMG Project. Right before lunch, we’ll be there to pick you up and take you back to the VMG Home-Base for a delicious lunch.

Then, we’re off again on an exciting Cultural & Learning Adventure. Some days, you might be learning about the education systems or family structures from an expert guest speaker. On others, you might find yourself in a coffee plantation, participating in a Mayan wedding ceremony, or visiting a local family.

After a delicious dinner prepared by the VMG cooks, the evenings are your time, to relax and reflect, explore your community, and get ready for your next exciting day of volunteering. And on weekends, some of our volunteers stay in the Home-Base to forge even deeper community connections, while others are off exploring the region and country through some exciting weekend trips!

Freizeitaktivitäten

Accra has developed a fairly western social scene in the recent years, mainly because of the large expatriate community in the city. On Friday night, singing karaoke in the champs sports bar at the Paloma Hotel, you would be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped back into Europe. And this has its place-after a month living in the village, a cocktail and some fluent English conversation can be just what you need.

There are some great deal of bars in Accra with much more feel, and much more opportunity to interact with Ghanaians, one popular place with volunteers is ’By well’ at the southern end of Osu Oxford street, where the house band plays every Thursday evening, Royal Palm (Nungua-Cold store) where on every Fridays-Sundays, you will experience a great scene of spinning. It is a real mix of music, with everything from Bob Marley to the Beatles, and of course, plenty of our own high-life and hip-life.

Cape coast also has good bars, ‘Oasis’ on the beach near the Castle is popular and sometimes has impressive live drumming and dancing shows. The night club at Cape Coast Hotel has ladies Night on Fridays; with free for lady’s entry (gents pay GHS 40). On almost every street in Ghana, you will find at least one spot bar, which is anything from a few plastic chairs outside a shack selling beer and local gin, to large garden bar serving a wide range of food and drinks.

Spot bars are usually relatively inexpensive, and the sorts of places local people to for their beer after work. Learning some Twi or Ewe and some Ga from the locals as the sun goes down and sip an ice-cold star or club beer can be a great and very cheap evening out. Labadi beach is also a place where volunteers go swimming and horse riding.
