About The Placement

With our foundation partner (Bryan Acheampong Foundation), we currently have 4 thrift shops in the semi rural area of Kwahu East. Selected members of the community that are in need and above 70 years of age have been given a beneficiary card that is topped up each month with a specific amount. They are then able to come to the shops anytime they want any purchase their basic items for absolutely free just using their allowance on the card.
The items stocked are basic food and hygiene items along with some treats and items of clothing, these are also funded by our foundation partner but we are looking for our longer term volunteers to start looking at approaching companies/businesses for an extra range of donations. Each store has one worker employed from the local community and overseen by the Social Services Programme Manager.

Why This Placement?

A lot of the time the elderly members of the community are left to fend for themselves. Often their children and family members have travelled and left the area in search of work etc and can often be a forgotten vulnerable group. With other projects we have going on we want to empower these people to feel independent again and assist them in a way so that they are not constantly searching for monies to source what they will eat for the week. If you visit us you will see that many elderly members of the community are still forced to complete tough physical work into their old age to be able to sustain themselves. For example it still amazes us seeing these small framed elderly women coming out of the forest carrying a huge pile of firewood. We hope that this project takes the pressure of these treasured members of  the community to give them more time to pass on their invaluable experience they have gained through life!

What Is Included In This Placement?

Although this placement is FREE of charge the following services are still included at no extra charge. This will include free accomodation and the use of the utilities, you will have use of the kitchen, electricity throughout the house and running water which is a luxury among the area of Kwahu. Daily transport to and from the project sites will also be covered for free by our organisation's vehicles. As well as the above mentioned we also offer a night stay in our director's house in Accra (Trassaco Estates) on your day of arrival to the country where you can relax after your journey and use the wifi to update your friends and family that you have arrived safely.

How Do I Get To The Placement?

You will be living in a shared volunteer house with modern amenities, a member of staff will live on site and be able to offer any guidance or advice you may need. You will be taken to the project site in the morning and returned home in the afternoon for free by our organisation's vehicles. The town in which the voluneer house is based is fairly developed with local shops, restaurants, bars, banks and markets. However just a short distance away to the project sites you will be experiencing remote villages often with no modern amenities and a large amount of the communities living under the poverty line.

What Will I Be Doing?

On a day to day basis you will be assisting the assigned shop keeper in general running of the store such as; restocking, cleaning and serving customers. To keep running costs as low as possible there is just one worker for each store so you will be there to provide an extra pair of hands.
There is also stock management to be done so introducing and updating tally sheets of what items are most and least popular so we can continually adjsut the stock to achieve the maximum benefit to all.
Finally we want to also introduce a survey scheme with the help of the shop keeper to translate where needed, this would be relevant questions and data capture of the beneficaries coming to shop from us, catching some basic marketing information as well as what affect this is having for them. Details such as what items are most helpful to them and what would they like to see in future, would be a good starting example.

Who Will I Be Working With?

You will be working in the shops with their assigned shop keeper who has been employed from the local community. You will be taken care of by the Social Services Programme Manager who runs the Thrift Shops as part of their development plan as well as our Volunteer Programme Manager and coordinators.

What Do We Expect From The Volunteers?

A willingness to help out and get hands on. As it's still early days for rolling this scheme out, some days the store can experience lower footfall, we would hope a volunteer shows passion for expanding the scheme, looking for sponsors to achieve sustainability and seeing what will help those in need the most.

What Can You Expect From Us?

We will be on hand any time of any day to support you in your placement and trip as a whole. There will always be someone you can speak to or get a hold of should you want to discuss anything or require any guidance, from organising after school clubs to changing your placement. Our team living in the volunteer house will also be able to offer advice regarding travel plans and the local area so you will soon feel at home.

What Should I Bring?

Regarding your trip we advise bringing plenty of school materials, arts & crafts items and some ideas from teaching resource websites. In case you end up helping out at holiday schools etc. We are always asking for story/reading books to add to our library collection for the launch of our mobile library. You may also wish to bring some fundraised money should you wish to assist in any renovation also.

Unterkunft

We currently have a three bedroom volunteer house located in the peaceful town of Pepease overlooking the rainforest. Later in the year we aim to move to a larger 13 bedroom house in a nearby town.

Bedrooms -
Bedrooms are shared usually between 2 - 3 people. Most bedrooms are a medium size and come with a mix of single, double or bunk beds. All doors and windows in the house are covered by mosquito netting or covered completely however you are more than welcome to bring a mosquito net for your bed although usually not necessary.

Bathrooms -
There are 3 shared bathrooms in the house so offer plenty of space and privacy during your stay. Most of the time we have the benfit of running water which is a local luxury so showers and toilets will work as usual. We ask to consider others when using the water as it's a valuable commodity in Ghana.

Kitchen -
We have one large kitchen with modern facilties such as gas stove, fridge freezer and a range of utensils. It is a self catered placement however plenty of food stuffs can be bought from the market such as bread, rice, pasta and many fresh ingredients. We also have connections with local people in the town who will be able to prepare your meals or teach you how to cook local dishes.

Living Room -
There is a large living room with sofas, TV and a dining set for use by the volunteers. Evenings are often spent in here and volunteers are welcome to bring DVDs or memory drives with movies to watch although local television channels are provided.

Garden -
Surrounding the house is a fenced garden, this offers privacy for relaxing in the sun or sitting out in the evenings. There is also a washing line space for volunteers to use.

Store Room -
We have a small store room where we keep left over teaching materials and resources for new volunteers to use. You are invited to leave any items you may not use here for the next person to continue the flow. Master copies of activity sheets or lesson plans are a key item we hope to see keep growing in the store.

Informationen zur Anreise

This placement is available throughout the year. You are welcome to arrive with us any day of the week or flight arrival time and we will adjust your airport collection accordingly.

How Do I Get From The Airport to Volunteer House On Arrival?

We can arrange for one of our vehicles to collect you from the airport and bring you directly to the volunteer house although fuel, airport parking and toll fees must be covered by yourself - payable in US dollars or Ghana cedi on the day. (As of March 2019 - this is 330 cedi = $60 USD exchange rate subject to change | You will be shown the costs for transparency as it's completely not for profit).

We will arrange this as standard procedure unless you choose to OPT OUT as we would feel much more comfortable with you arriving into a new country that the team are on hand to greet and reliable vehicles made available for you and your luggage.
Upon arrival our Accra Airport coordinator and driver (Betty & George) will meet you outside the arrivals hall at Kotoka Intl. Airport. They will be holding a sign with your name on so they should be easy to spot! You will then be taken to our directors house (Bryan) in Accra a short journey from the airport to Trassaco Estates where you will be able to relax for the night and update your friends and family of your arrival on the wifi. The following morning our team will then pick you up from Trassaco Estates and bring you straight to the Kwahu Mountains (Abetifi) where we will continue with our orientation to introduce you to the area, get a sim card, take you shopping and change over any currency needed.
