The lack of economic power of the rural communities, especially among women, is a major obstacle to long term development. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Alter 18+

Women in Africa, Uganda inclusive, are an economically disadvantaged group and rural women in particular are more economically disadvantaged.  The lack of economic power of the rural communities, especially among women, is a major obstacle to long term development.

Although women have great contribution to the African socio-economic development, in Uganda, they still remain among the most vulnerable members of the society. Women face many challenges including; discrimination, low social status, low literacy rates, limited access to education, unequal rights, poverty, and greater risk of HIV/AIDS infection; which is directly attributed to the long-standing patriarchal traditions and extreme poverty.

These challenges are especially difficult to overcome for women, as there are fewer jobs available to them, and family concerns can often monopolize their time. Gender roles in rural Uganda still adhere to traditional and cultural codes. When a family is struggling economically, girls are more likely than boys to be taken out of school to help with income-generating activities or agricultural labor, and they are more likely to be married at a young age.

The aim of the project is to provide support to young women in developing the skills needed to carry out income-generating activities so they can provide for themselves and their families.

If you’re someone who is interested in promoting better opportunities for women in Uganda, this is a rewarding project to support. This is where you come in!

What will I be doing?

As a volunteer on the Women’s Empowerment project, you will work closely with local community centers, providing support to women and their families. Your role will be focused on providing mentoring support around management, financing and educational development to increase independence among the women and allow mothers to better support their families. Many of the women’s groups are involved in craft-making through basket weaving, sewing, tailoring and jewelry-making, and the crafts they make are then sold in order to generate income and provide for their families. Volunteers are also encouraged to create educational training materials on topics such as managing finances, vocational skills and building self-esteem.

First Day: On the first day of the volunteering placement, the volunteers will be escorted to the project by our Principle Volunteer Program Consultant or by the Project manager and introduced to the staff at the project you will be working with.

Weekdays: While our programs are flexible and can be fitted to your requirements, a typical day is as follows.

·         8.00AM Breakfast with the host family / or at the Volunteer Guest Home

·         8.30AM Volunteer leaves home to the project;

·         The volunteer joins with the local staff. You will be given a duty roster and a plan for your work. There is usually a lunch break.  Work and hours is dependent on the project and location that the volunteer is participating in.

·         2.00PM-5.00PM Work at the project usually ends. The volunteer at this point is free to visit and see places or do shopping.

·         7.30PM Dinne

Weekends: During the weekend, volunteers have spare time and usually just relax or take the opportunity to explore other parts of their local towns in Uganda or to embark on a wildlife safari, chimpanzee tracking or gorilla trek.  These tours can be organized in advance or during your orientation day. Please check with the Principle Volunteer Program Consultant if you are interested in any of the tours.

Sunday is a rest and church day in Uganda. If volunteers wish they can accompany their host family to their local church. Even if volunteers do not prescribe to the religion of the host family, it is recommended that volunteers attend at least one church service with their host family as an African church service is unlike anything you will every experience.

Where you stay during your time as a volunteer can have a huge impact on your ability to enjoy the experience. That’s why all of our projects ensure that the accommodation we provide is safe, secure and comfortable. The type of accommodation depends very much on the project you are working with, but generally it will fall into one of the following categories: Home-stay; Volunteer Apartment/ Guest House sharing with other volunteers; tented camp (for expeditions); Eco-Camp. Volunteers maybe placed to stay with a homestay arrangement or at our rented volunteer’s guesthouses. Housing will be arranged on a case by case basis to ensure the comfort of each volunteer. Private rooms are available upon request and their attract extra accommodation charges – US$50 per day. Volunteers who prefer this arrangement should contact us in advance prior to their arrival in Uganda.

Most of our accommodations are within a short walking distance though in other projects the volunteer will have to take a public transport to get to the project site though special arrangements can be done for a private transportation with an extra fee of $20 per day per person to cover for the fuel expenses and the drivers and if you are many, then you can always split up the private transportation expenses. Private transportation to the project site can be arranged on the first day of your project placement or during the orientation. Please book your private transportation with our Business Administrator during the orientation day to avoid any inconveniences during your project placement.

No adventure would be complete without getting to taste the local cuisine, and on each of our volunteer adventures this is exactly what we want you to do. A great opportunity to experience the delights of the local culture and take your taste buds on an adventure too! Ugandan food is tasty, diverse and volunteers can expect to experience flavors and meals during their volunteer experience. Volunteers are provided with 3 meals each day.  If you wish to eat or drink outside of meal times, that will be at your own cost. There are local shops within the villages where you can buy snacks (among other things). Breakfast is served at around 8am, lunch at 1:00pm and dinner is served between 7:00pm -8:00pm. However, we need to stress the point that you should not expect to eat as you normally do at home. We will do our best to see that you are well taken care of, but also as a volunteer, there is a need to be flexible. If you have special eating needs, please let us know ahead of time so that we can make arrangements for you.
