Review Description

Eternal Life Organization International Ministries (Eloi Ministries) is a group of people passionately committed to improving access to healthcare, education, justice and rehabilitation for communities in Africa. We aim to restore the dignity and hope of those we serve by helping to provide humane conditions and services which help them to regain their dignity. We build and refurbish village medical and educational facilities to provide innovative services and work to change the attitudes of the societies we serve.

Eloi Ministries is a NGO and was founded in 2007 and duly registered in 2009. It was founded by Steven Tendo. Eloi Ministries runs technical and vocational training centres, medical missions, bible colleges, orphanage centres, worship centres, schools of ministry, libraries, crusades, seminars, conferences and mobile clinics.

The community views Eloi Ministries as a beacon of hope, a lighthouse, having established itself in the middle of such an area as an organization to reach the people of the surrounding area with the gospel of Jesus Christ, its goal is to link the organization to community service and development through nurturing an environment that will empower people from this region to participate fully in the efforts designed to alleviate poverty, ignorance, and disease affecting them, through nurturing a people centered and sustainable development approach.

What should I bring with me?

Anything electrical must be on 240 current. If you have something that is on 110v you must also have a converter. You might also consider an adaptor for Africa (3 prong) to use in plugging in your electrical items that may not need a converter (i.e. laptops, iPods, some phones and cameras). Sunscreen and bug spray are also recommended. Your personal toiletries (shampoo, washcloth, towel), a pillow, and comfortable clothing/shoes. Shorts are not worn in the slums or in town. All pants need to be knee length as well as skirts/dresses for the women. No tube or midi tops. Bathing suits need to be modest. No see through clothing. Shoes should be comfortable and sturdy. Tennis shoes can be a bit hot for your feet and washing socks is sometimes difficult. Shoes like Tevas or Choco's are recommended. Do not bring expensive jewelry. Uganda has lots of orange dirt, light colored clothing tends to get ruined very quickly. Wash and wear clothing is the best, especially ones with Lycra in them. Earplugs are also recommended, especially if you are a light sleeper.

Health Requirements

Contact your personal doctor, or find a local travel clinic, to obtain proper immunizations for travel to Uganda. Yellow fever is the only required vaccine for entering Uganda, but it is recommended that you are current on several others. Malaria is a concern here, and caution should be taken to avoid mosquito bites by using a deet-based repellent and sleeping under a mosquito net. Mosquito nets are provided at ELOI M. Short term volunteers should consider malaria preventatives like Doxycycline (cheap) or Malarone (expensive). You can purchase the anti-malarials here in Uganda upon arrival or get from your Dr. Before you come.

Is Uganda safe?

As far as risks in traveling, Uganda is actually one of the safest places to travel. The country is very visitor friendly. The people here are mostly very peaceful and non-violent. The Brandt Travel guide states that Uganda is one of the safest places for tourists. We have had many volunteers come and go without any incident. It is important to take precautions, as you would anywhere, by not being alone at night.

Experience it!

The Eloi Ministries and African experience is best understood by experiencing it. We welcome you to pay a visit and see the Eloi Ministries model in action. Come and interact with the locals!

For those who want to get their hands dirty, the Eloi Ministries experience can also be one of serving. You can get involved as a volunteer in various Eloi Ministries initiatives either as an individual or team.

Every volunteer will have the unique opportunity to serve alongside the Eloi Ministries team and contribute to a transformed life. So why wait, come and experience Eloi Ministries and Africa today.
