GIVE Volunteers

3 Project reviews of GIVE Volunteers

Project Details

GIVE is a Seattle-based travel organization that unites international service, adventure travel, and academics to create a meaningful volunteer experience abroad.

GIVE offers amazing, once-in-a-lifetime adventures that transform the lives of its volunteers, igniting new passions and inspiring incredible personal growth. Work and play side by side with welcoming locals. Immerse yourself in extraordinary new worlds. Break down cultural barriers and build up lifelong relationships.

Our sustainable development initiatives have a lasting impact on the communities we serve and the volunteers who engage with them. And unlike other programs, our volunteers stay involved long after their experience ends, becoming lifelong global citizens and goodwill ambassadors.

Our Mission

Our mission is to inspire growth, empower global citizens, and ignite sustainable change worldwide.

What Set's GIVE Apart?

With over 10 million people volunteering abroad each year and more than a thousand different organizations offering volunteer trips, it’s no surprise that one of the most common questions we hear is, “What makes GIVE different?”  In fact, it was this very question that inspired Jake Allison to found GIVE in 2011.  After several years of witnessing the good, the bad, and the sometimes ugly sides of the volunteer tourism industry, he ultimately determined that there is real potential for volunteer travel to have positive impacts around the world, but it would require a fresh, focused approach to truly foster sustainable change. This experience inspired him to establish The GIVE Promise: a commitment to always put people, projects and principles above profit.

Social Impact

In order to truly inspire growth, GIVE has adopted the Asset-based community development (ABCD) model, a proven best practice in sustainable development that mobilizes a community’s own assets and resources as the bases for development. Furthermore, through providing hands-on, eye-opening learning experiences and fostering authentic connections between volunteers and host community members, we are able to empower global citizens who will continue to spread GIVE’s values and ignite sustainable change worldwide.

GIVE selects projects using the Asset-Based Community Development model. This involves working with community leaders and NGOs in our host communities to identify their strengths, and then determining ways to build on those strengths using leading sustainable development principles.

We work to empower communities to help themselves. In contrast to the traditional needs-based development model, which focuses on local problems and relies on outside agencies for help, asset-based community development emphasizes the existing strengths and potentials within a community and empowers its members to take action. When identifying projects, we first assess the resources, skills, and knowledge already available in a community, unite the community around issues that inspire its members to act, and then work alongside local leaders to form a plan of action.  GIVE’s ultimate goal is for our host communities to take full responsibility of our projects as soon as possible.
