Review Description

Live and work at the beach! The Honduras Child Alliance provides educational enrichment and healthy living programs for children, teens, and adults in the north-coast beach community of El Porvenir. Programs include: English & Spanish literacy, computer instruction, sexuality education, arts, intro to science, sports and fitness, group skills/conflict resolution, and more!  Our blended team of volunteers from around the world, alongside our bilingual team of Honduran managers and interns, work together in a unified effort.

These projects were initiated in response to our awareness that the cycle of poverty is perpetuated through a lack of education. The combined energy of our interns,  volunteers, managers, and directors blends a unique and effective set of skills to support educational and humanitarian projects which target that cycle. As we collaborate to develop opportunities for children in El Porvenir, we welcome volunteers, sponsors, and cooperation with like-minded organizations.

Volunteers will work within the community in a variety of roles/programs. We work as a blended team of international volunteers and Honduran young adults. There are 3 local managers on-site who support the educational component, administration, and management of the volunteer housing. You will receive a full orientation and are never scheduled to work by yourself in a classroom.

  • PEP+ (Porvenir Enrichment Program "plus") is an educational enrichment program for grades 1-6 operating from a professionally developed, project-based curriculum that focuses on literacy in Spanish, conversational English, and computer proficiency, while also incorporating art, science, teamwork, and social skills. These programs operate from February through November.
  • Vacation Activities Program (VAP) operates during the school break of November, December, and January. VAP is a volunteer-powered 'summer camp' style enrichment program that helps reinforce academic skills in a fun and experiential setting.
  • Healthy Snacks Program: Many children in our program experience food insecurity and arrive to class hungry. The Healthy Snacks Program provides a daily, protein-filled snack to each child. Snacks are designed to model healthy and locally available food choices.
  • PEP-Adultos:  English instruction for adults.
  • Study-Buddies: Adults from our English program provide online tutoring and practice in conversational Spanish.
  • Sexuality Education: Normalizing conversations about sexuality, gender equity, menstrual health, and more!

Honduras Child Alliance reviews

I first volunteered with HCA in 2016 and came back two years later to develop a program. I directly felt welcomed there, by the volunteers and the community. Teaching English to kids and adults is really inspiring because you can see the impacts on them. So there are different types of classes: ...
I volunteered with HCA for four months after graduating high school and I am so grateful that I did. When I arrived in El Porvenir, I was warmly welcomed by a wonderful and enthusiastic group of volunteers from all around the world (Germany, Scotland, Israel, Australia, Spain etc.) The classes were ...
Translation: My experience in Honduras is one of the most beautiful things that ever happened to me. Honduras is an incredible country and surprising in many ways. El Porvenir is a small village in the Atlantis region. Our daily lives are filled with laughter and smiles of all kinds. It is a real ...
Honduras Child Alliance was my first longer volunteering experience. I had originally planned to stay 2 months, but I fell in love with the community and realized I had a lot left to learn from its people, that I returned for another 4 months. The way the organization is set up, it truly fosters a ...
I began working with Honduras Child Alliance in February 2019 as the Healthy Snacks Coordinator. In the past five months, I have felt so safe and supported during my time in El Porvenir, and have had the opportunity to get to know people from all over the world and make a difference working with ...
I spent four months living in El Porvenir on a gap semester between high school and college. The town itself is beautiful, quiet, and safe, the people are very friendly, and the children are absolutely amazing. Teaching PEP classes to the kids each day was a blast and I formed strong relationships ...
