Who are Travellers?

Travellers is a voluntary organisation that was set up in 1994 by husband and wife team, Phil and Jennifer Perkes, to enable people from all over the world to be able to experience the joys of living and working in foreign countries. Having travelled extensively and been lucky enough to work in various countries, they believed that everyone should have the opportunity to meet and live with different cultures, races and ethnic groups, and to gain experiences and memories which, like their own, would stay with them for the rest of their lives.

And now, many thousands of volunteers and interns later, they and their dedicated team have done just that!

What do we do and where do we work?

We help you find an experience of a lifetime that is both fulfilling and rewarding. You'll build skills, make lifelong friends and contribute to less fortunate communities. Choose from over 250 voluntary placements in Wildlife Conservation, Working with children in Teaching or Care, Work Experience Internships and Study Abroad Courses in 20 different countries. With us you'll have a unique experience that is fulfilling, very worthwhile... and lots of fun and adventure.

All our placements are suitable for gap years, bridge years, grown-up gappers, career breaks, students, internships and retired people.

The countries and locations we work in have all been vetted and risk assessed by us to ensure that our volunteers are as safe as can be. As Volunteer Alice Nimmo said: "TRAVELLERS WORLDWIDE ARE THE BEST!!!!!!!!! I had and amazing experience with Travellers, 10/10 and 101% For all of their efforts ... I would so recommend this company, it's very safe as safety always comes first with Travellers. pick them if you want to get the best out of your money for a life-changing experience. Alice xx"

We also vet individual projects before working with them to ensure that our volunteers' efforts are worthwhile and beneficial to the communities they're assisting. That includes working with rescued, orphaned or abused animals or species whose existence is threatened, or working with disadvantaged children or adults, or communities that are in need of support in different ways.

This means that  the children you work with, the animals you help to save, and the local communities all benefit hugely from your very kind efforts! And if you're interning to further your career, you'll learn from your host company - and they will learn from you.

Why choose us?

Travellers has a team of people who look after your program from the planning stage through to completion. Many of them are ex-Travellers volunteers. With their own volunteering experience and the expertise they've gained through working in Travellers, they know exactly what volunteers' requirements are - and they fully understand things like last minute nerves or homesickness!

We also have over 60 staff and partners overseas to look after you. So, between our Home Team and our Overseas Teams, you will get excellent support and backup while on your project.

  • Our placements are open to everybody, from 16 and up, or younger if accompanied by an adult. All nationalities & ages are welcome.
  • They are available throughout the year and are incredibly flexible - you can choose your start and finish dates and include time for independent travel.
  • Placements last from 1 week to 1 year, subject to visa requirements.
  • You don't need any qualifications or experience to take part in most of our projects.
  • We are a conscientious, friendly staff team of ex-volunteers, we know exactly how it feels!
  • We have excellent support and backup, from booking your arrangements, throughout your placement to your return home (incl. a 24 hour UK Emergency phone line). Our local staff can also help you with sightseeing arrangements and will be happy to suggest exciting places to visit.
  • We can give you expert advice on flights, visas, travel insurance etc. We can also help you plan any independent travel.
  • The cost of your placement usually covers all food and accommodation (unless otherwise stated), being met at the airport, full support & in-country care. All you need is spending money.
  • Wherever possible we can tailor make a project to suit your requirements.
  • We provide comprehensive current information packs covering everything you need to know, from safety all the way through to what to pack.
  • We have a huge variety of many worthwhile placements where you can MAKE A DIFFERENCE or, in the case of an internship or course, GAIN VALUABLE EXPERIENCE.
  • We have 20+ years of experience with solid, well run programs. Ask us for contact details of past volunteers and speak to them for yourself.
  • We try to be as accurate and transparent as possible ... "I have read your brochure and I was drawn to your company because of your honesty about the projects being hard work and needing a sense of humour. Other companies seem to sugar coat these projects and make them seem perfect which is not realistic."
  • Travellers was a Founder Member of the Year Out Group, whose aims are dedicated to setting rigorous standards for structured gap year opportunities. In fact, we helped to draft many of the Standards.

Social Impact

By supporting our projects, you’re influencing the local community in many ways, such as, preserving their natural environment and wildlife, bringing income to the projects. enabling them to develop growth and education through cultural exchange.

The Positive Effects Travellers and our Volunteers and Interns have on the Local Environments:

We provide our volunteers with many tips on how to be a responsible traveller regarding the environmental impact they have. We want you to be immersed in the culture, by living and working with local people. We work with local communities, local charities, local government bodies and local schools. We often partner with local organisations whom we have vetted to ensure that they are committed to the projects they run, that they have the same responsible attitude to the local community that we do, that they are eco-friendly and have ethical policies.

In our projects and in our headquarters offices, we take an environmentally responsible attitude towards recycling and reusing of waste products. Our volunteers are given pre-departure Information that encourages them to minimise waste and reduce their use of water and electricity, in other words, to live sensitively in the environment they’re working in.

Our projects enable vital conservation, research, care and education work to take place directly where it is most needed. For example, we kept a Species Survival Conservation project in South Africa afloat until completion after it was threatened by lack of funds. Our volunteers contribute, all over the world, to projects that would not exist without them. Travellers also give donations as and when required by projects. This is often done through our charitable arm, The Bridge The Gap Foundation.

Our Projects are sustainable and on-going. Your work contributes to, and helps to continue, the long chain of worthwhile achievements in the communities.

Social Responsibility:

The information we provide prepares our volunteers for their placement and how to deal with the local people. It also briefs our volunteers on the Do’s and Don’ts and ensures that they are aware of the possible impact of their behaviour.

Cultural sensitivity:

Volunteers receive an induction and orientation on arrival which covers things like being sensitive to the culture you’re in, everyday processes which will be different to what you’re accustomed to, how to have the maximum beneficial imprint and the minimum negative impact. We stress the importance of responsible tourism, cultural differences and acceptable/unacceptable conduct.

Economic Responsibility:

By living in the community, you’re providing much needed income and employment to the local population. You’ll be actively encouraged to recycle, be efficient with energy and water usage and preserve the natural surroundings.

For 25 years our volunteers have lived in local communities around the world, spent their money with local traders and brought funding to the projects they work with. Travellers employs local staff and works with local support staff. This helps to fund the project directly and through bringing money into the local community.

The organisations we work with often struggle to financially support and maintain the work they do, so every penny raised makes a real difference. Our aim is to create always a Win-Win-Win situation in terms of the benefits for, (a) the local communities and institutions you work in, (b) our Volunteers, i.e. you, and (c) for Travellers. We do not embark on any project that is not beneficial to all three of these stakeholders.
