In some poor neighborhoods of Shkoder, children often spend their free-time on the streets without any adult supervision and do not have the opportunity to participate in team building or safe leisure activities after school. As a volunteer on the After School Care project in Albania, you will provide care to children from disadvantaged neighborhoods within Shkoder.
This project is well suited to volunteers who enjoy working with children and supporting youth development outside of a classroom setting. Strong organizational skills and the ability to improvise will be highly valuable on this project, as providing care to children in an unstructured environment can be challenging. However, the children are incredibly enthusiastic and grateful for the opportunity to learn from international volunteers.
When volunteering on the After School Care project in Albania, you will organize after school workshops and educational activities, incorporating music, art, cooking, sports, games and leisure activities. While some basic resources are available, volunteers are required to use their initiative to develop activities and bringing resources to assist with activities is encouraged. As the project runs in the afternoon, you have the morning free to plan for the day’s work or take advantage of the Albania language lessons offered by our local team.
As you will be volunteering alongside our local placement staff, you do not need to be qualified or have teaching experience to join this project.
Volunteers tasks include helping children learn English, coaching sports and helping with recreation activities. Educational standards in Albania are very poor compared to other destinations in Europe, you might be shocked by the basic nature of classrooms and schools. You will usually be working alongside other international participants and also local staff to ensure the structured running of classes helping children to progress in learning.
Albania is very much a country looking to the future and you can play a role in improving life for local people. Hundreds of people work as a volunteer every year but more people are needed, this country really needs more hands on the ground to help development and we highly recommend applying if you want to make a real difference. You will get to learn more about the country and interact with friendly local people who will be really happy to know you have travelled there to help. People in Albania will be very curious about you and your reasons for being in their country.
1- Knowledge of practical conservation and water sanitation
2- Global competencies like teamwork, communication, leadership, resilience, organizing, planning, and time management.
3- Certificates award
4- The ability to work and empathize with people of different cultures and backgrounds, helping to develop a ‘global mindset’.
5- Confidence from pushing past your comfort zone.
Volunteering in Albania amounts to that rarely experienced thing, immersion in another people’s culture while at the same time carrying out a genuinely needed service.
