Effective Microorganism Technology was invented in the 1970's by Prof. Teruo Higa of Ryukus University in Japan in 1993, as a technology that can aid environmental and agricultural conservation. In Kenya, it was introduced in Kenya in the year 2000 by Japanese missionary.

EM is a mixture of microorganisms which are found in nature and are beneficial. They also include those microorganisms found in fermented foods such as the yogurt, beer, vinegar, etc. In agriculture, EM is useful in making compost, reducing soil salinity, suppressing of soil borne pathogens in green houses and for top dressing in crops. in animals it helps in improving digestibility, immunity and productivity, suppression of pests like worms, bad smell in livestock units and external pests.

ACEF works with trainers, community groups and the devolved government units to promote environmental and agricultural conservation in Kenya.

Details on arrival

Our program runs throughout the year with some slight changes in the activities due to seasonal changes because in Kenya, agriculture is mainly dependent on the climate. However, there are activities all year round.

In addition, there are no specific arrival days for volunteers as our drivers and some staff are always available for pick up. However, we highly recommend the arrival time to be during the day and early in the evening to avoid inconveniences at night because our institution is about 70 kilometers from the airport.
