Age 18+

Volunteers will work under supervision to take care of lemurs that were rescued from the pet-trade, cattle and domestic cats. Experience includes but is not limited to feeding, cleaning enclosures, enrichment, operant conditioning and enclosure construction. Special projects include, fence building and repair, building enclosures for lemurs or cats. Mowing grass, planting plants for self-sustainability for the farm and general grounds maintenance. Days usually last from 8 am to about 5 pm and after that the volunteers are free to do other activities. Generally, the work week is a 5-day work week with 2 days off, the days of the week may vary depending on available work projects for that time. Volunteers should be able to handle the extreme Florida heat during the months of July through September. During the summer months we do have extended lunch times and ability to take frequent breaks indoors due to the heat. Volunteers are able to take additional time off as long as coordinated one week ahead of time to ensure continued animal care. There are many opportunities in the area to do nature excursions and other fun activities if you have your own transportation. If you do not have your own transportation, the staff will try to assist with transportation to and from activities but we cannot guarantee the availability of this. You will have your own private bedroom, however you may be sharing a bathroom with one other volunteer.

Typical day

Get up around 8 and start the day with cleaning animal feeding and watering containers, prepare food for cats and lemurs, take part in any special project, such as fence building, grounds maintenance. After lunch, spend time training or operant conditioning with cattle or lemurs and socialize cats. Feed cattle and lemurs in late afternoon.

Florida offers a variety of activities in the area, we are about one hour form Tampa Florida and about 45 minutes from the world's best beaches. There are museums and nature parks in the area as well.
