Whether you are currently a high school student considering a career in veterinary medicine, an undergraduate, or on a career break, interning as a veterinary intern will allow you to gain invaluable experience of vaccinations, operations, post-mortems, and the routine treatment of domestic farm animals and pets.

Ghana, in Western Africa, is a wide expanse of mostly low plains. Its climate is hot and tropical with pockets of dry or humid areas in certain parts of the country. A portion of the land is used for farming and the welfare of domestic animals is an essential for rural development.

Shadowing local vets will give you the opportunity to observe diseases that have been eradicated in North America and Europe and will also give you a better understanding about the problems that vets and farmers face. By showing initiative and a willingness to get involved, you will benefit from this truly rewarding experience.

Intern with Animals in Ghana

As an intern in Ghana on one of our veterinary internships, you can provide effective and practical help working on a variety of tasks. When you arrive at work on your first day, you will be assigned a supervisor who will advise and support you throughout your internship; of course our staff is always on hand too.

Veterinary Medicine interns live and work, where the work is structured around daily site visitations to local farms. For interns who would prefer to work in a veterinary surgery dealing with mostly domestic pets, we can arrange a placement in Accra, Ghana’s capital city.

Interns work alongside a small team of local vets to out into the field to visit farms that have livestock. You may be involved in administering vaccinations, observing and assisting with operations, post mortems, and routine treatments. For those who prefer to work in a city clinic in Accra, the work is mostly with domestic pets such as dogs and cats.

Typical day

Whether you work as a Veterinary Medicine or an Animal Care volunteer, you will be given a placement supervisor who is responsible for giving you a full and varied flavor of the kind of work done by the people in this field.

You will shadow local professionals and will gain hands-on experience which benefits your level of experience. You will be able to ask questions and learn from your local colleagues.

Free-time activities

Accra has developed a fairly western social scene in the recent years, mainly because of the large expatriate community in the city. On Friday night, singing karaoke in the champs sports bar at the Paloma Hotel, you would be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped back into Europe. And this has its place-after a month living in the village, a cocktail and some fluent English conversation can be just what you need.

There are some great deal of bars in Accra with much more feel, and much more opportunity to interact with Ghanaians, one popular place with volunteers is ’By well’ at the southern end of Osu Oxford street, where the house band plays every Thursday evening, Royal Palm (Nungua-Cold store) where on every Fridays-Sundays, you will experience a great scene of spinning. It is a real mix of music, with everything from Bob Marley to the Beatles, and of course, plenty of our own high-life and hip-life.

Cape coast also has good bars, ‘Oasis’ on the beach near the Castle is popular and sometimes has impressive live drumming and dancing shows. The night club at Cape Coast Hotel has ladies Night on Fridays; with free for lady’s entry (gents pay GHS 40). On almost every street in Ghana, you will find at least one spot bar, which is anything from a few plastic chairs outside a shack selling beer and local gin, to large garden bar serving a wide range of food and drinks.

Spot bars are usually relatively inexpensive, and the sorts of places local people to for their beer after work. Learning some Twi or Ewe and some Ga from the locals as the sun goes down and sip an ice-cold star or club beer can be a great and very cheap evening out. Labadi beach is also a place where volunteers go swimming and horse riding.
