Ireland is a wonderful country; it is safe, friendly, English speaking, rich in heritage, history and culture. From vibrant, exciting cities to spectacular countryside – it’s a magical place to visit. It’s also a wonderful place to stay and immerse yourself doing meaningful volunteer work.

CTL Ireland collaborates with a well-established Arts Centre. The centre is located in the friendly town of Clonmel and welcomes international and local volunteers to support its work. This Arts Centre presents a range of visual arts exhibitions in its gallery space. It also organises creative workshops and classes for children, young people and adults to engage with high standard arts programmes. The Arts Centre is also involved in the organisation of specific events such as concerts, poetry readings and dance. The project is run by professional staff members who are supported by interns and volunteers and welcomes volunteers all year round.

Project Highlights

  • Unique insight into the Irish Arts sector
  • Opportunity to work with children, young people and adults
  • Experienced and qualified staff
  • Full cultural immersion in an Irish community
  • Unique host family experience
  • Diversity of volunteer activities

Volunteer work

Volunteers can get involved in a wide variety of activities. At the beginning of the programme, volunteers are presented with the different possible tasks and they discuss with their project mentor in which areas they will be involved.

Volunteers generally help with the organisation and facilitations of arts workshops. They are also expected to support the work of the Arts Centre in other areas such as event promotion, marketing and general administration. The Arts Centre is also working in partnership with several other local projects in the arts sector and volunteers may have the opportunity to get involved with them for example by supporting the organisation of a concert or a festival.

Volunteers generally work 5 to 7h per day, 5 days per week. Volunteers have 2 days off per week, generally the week end. Volunteers always have 2 days off per week, generally during the week-end.

There will be 1 or 2 international volunteers at the same time at the project (there could be one only). The project is also welcoming local interns and volunteers. There might be other international volunteers in other projects in Clonmel with who they can link and meet during their free time.

Example of tasks:

  • Assisting in workshop facilitation
  • Providing administrative support
  • Helping organising arts events within the centre and outside the centre with partner organisations
  • Supporting marketing and promotion campaigns
  • Supporting social media activities

Who are we looking for?

Volunteers with a diversity of profiles are welcome; they do not necessarily need to have an artistic background. For example, volunteers with a background in marketing or social media are in need at the project. Volunteers joining the project should have at least an intermediate level of spoken English. This is a good project for participants to improve their English as they will be working side by side with Irish people.

Location

The arts centre project is located in Clonmel, County Tipperary. Clonmel town is a busy town that provides shopping and various services for people of the surrounding rural area. It has a population of about 18,000 people. It is located 2 ½ hours from the capital city Dublin and 1 ½ hours from Cork city. Clonmel is well served by bus and train services. The town is nestled in the Comeragh Mountains with the Knockmealdown Mountains to the South and legendary Slievenamon to the East. Hillwalking and cycling are popular local activities. There is always something happening in Clonmel, with frequent theatre, concerts, live music, art exhibitions and festivals.
