Volunteer in a shelter for girls rescued from human trafficking and sexual abuse. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
In this shelter live around 20 girls, children and adolescents, who have been rescued from human trafficking or from violent and abusive situations by the police or child protection services. It’s surrounded by a beautiful green garden but well hidden in a forest two hours away from Cochabamba. The shelter is not easy to find because the abusers or criminal networks from which the children were rescued may still be looking for them. The shelter is a safe but also secured home, some of the girls sometimes try to escape during their first few weeks after arrival because it takes a while to gain their trust and undo the process of brainwashing they’ve experienced. Here they receive housing, food, legal support, psychological help, therapy and can take part in various activities. In this organization you can help organize these activities. Especially art, dance and music is popular with children and adolescents. Working in this project is emotionally challenging and requires a minimum of 3 months and a good base of Spanish because of the particular environment.

Possible tasks:

  • help with recreational activities
  •  workshops in theatre, dance and arts
  •  cooking with the girls
  •  teaching assistant (depending on Spanish skills).

Typical day

In the morning, after you had breakfast with your host family, you get in the trufi (the common public transport) to your project. As always, there is rush hour and traffic but you get to chitchat with the locals. It takes a while to get to the project but you are used to it by now.

The project organized summer school for the girls and you offered to give English and Sports classes in the morning. You prepared a simple conversation game with a lot of interaction and later you teach them the "body parts" in a playful way. In your Sports classes you continue with Volleyball and the girls already caught up on the rules and techniques, and they start to play a full match and are motivated. It's loud and you play the referee without avoiding many discussions about fairness.

After Lunch, you meet with a group of girls, that volunteered to start a gardening project with you. You are a little disappointed because only two girls showed up for the third meeting, but they are enthusiastic and you finish the timber frame with wood you gathered in the nearby forest and still feeling the warming up from the Sport classes, you finish your day of work with dirty hands but a 2m x 4m frame where you plan to plant some vegetables with the girls.

In the afternoon you head back to the city and you find that you don’t have much energy left, but you need to prepare classes for the next day. A bummer, especially because there is a concert at the Jazz Café you don’t want to miss out. After taking a shower at home, you decide to grab Dinner in the street instead of eating with your host family and have a Choripan from your favorite street vendor.
