Help make a difference to underprivileged children in Nepal by teaching and assisting in a range of public and private local schools. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

You will get fully involved with all aspects, from planning lessons through to teaching your very own class! The enthusiasm and smiles of the staff and children will make you feel at home from day one.

As tourism is such a major industry in Nepal, being able to speak fluent English is now a must-have skill if you are wanting to get the higher paid jobs.

The Nepalese education system severely lacks investment and so is of an incredibly low standard. Around 41% of all adults in Nepal are completely illiterate, as teachers are often very under-qualified and children do not get the education that they need.

Most of the teaching projects are based in Kathmandu and are generally within walking distance or a short ride on public transport. You may also get the opportunity to volunteer at the local orphanage, teaching English or helping the staff to take care of some of the mentally disabled children, who adore the volunteer visits.

Starting with the basics of the language, the children are very happy to learn short, simple sentences which help them to express themselves. The children also look to pick up the language naturally as you spend more time with them over your time as a volunteer.

With the children ranging from 5-15 years old, they are very eager to learn. These young pupils all have a real thirst for knowledge that helps to make your teaching experience as rewarding for you as it is for them.

You will plan and teach fun and interactive lessons that develop the children’s confidence and conversational skills that will make a huge difference!

Volunteers for this project will need to have lots of enthusiasm for working with children. You also need to be fluent in English, whilst also being willing to learn more about the country of Nepal and the different styles of teaching there.

Typical day

Our English teaching volunteers usually teach for between 5-6 hours per day from Monday to Friday. Throughout your day you will be teaching different groups of classes, with children aged between 5 and 15 years old. Some of the activities throughout your volunteering time will include:

  • Assisting the local teachers with lessons following local curriculum
  • Lead your own classes (once familiar with everything)
  • Evolve new ways of teaching in a play-way method
  • Carrying out any administrative responsibility given by managers or teachers
  • Improving speaking/listening and pronunciation skills for children
  • Providing recreational activities and playing with the children
  • Taking the children on small excursions, on picnics or outings
  • Help with various tasks around the centre as required

If you are looking to make a real difference to the lives of children in these underprivileged local communities, all the while exploring the spiritual and culturally rich country of Nepal – this is the programme for you.
