Get involved in Child Care in Colombia. Give back to society while helping children from remote rural areas and refugee children from Venezuela. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

The host institutions of this volunteer program is a Colombian foundation, It was established more than 15 years ago by a local pediatrician. The foundation's mission is giving children with serious or chronic diseases and their families a safe and loving home while they are being treated with medical care. The foundation cares for children who suffer complex disease, such as cancer, HIV, cleft lip or palate, as well as hearing and visual impariments. The foundation can accommodate up to 20 children and their family members.

Most of the children come from very  remote areas of Colombia where they do not have access to hospitals and the necessary medical treatment or they simply cannot afford it. The foundation also even welcomes children from the neighboring country Venezuela.

The foundation covers all costs for treatment, accommodation, meals and transportation to the infirmary. The children receive the necessary medical care, their families usually stay with them during the duration of the treatment.

The volunteer project is located around 40 km north of the capital Bogotá. It is set in a breathtaking and idyllic landscape. In the surrounding green areas and in the large garden, the children have space to play, but also a place where they can find serenity and peace.

Typical day

As a volunteer, you support the employees and the families in their everyday tasks.

These include:

  • Helping the children with their homework
  • Playing, drawing, painting, singing, dancing, etc. with the children
  • Making board games with the children and their families
  • Playing outdoors with the kids and doing outdoor activities
  • Preparing and realizing birthday parties for the children or other celebrations

Additionally, you have the opportunity to help in the ecological project of Ecoparque Sabana and to contribute to the conservation of the rich biodiversity of the region's flora and fauna.

Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of volunteers, season, current needs of the project, as well as self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these tasks.

Free-time activities

Tocancipá is a small town founded by Spanish settlers in the La Sabana region, 40 km north of the capital Bogotá. A stroll through the restored historic town center from the 16th century reveals Colombia's colonial past. Tocancipá is a picturesque little town surrounded by nature and invites to hiking trips in the area, for example on the Camino del Gone hiking trail. It is also worth visiting the waterfall along the Quebrada Honda river or the Piedras de Sevilla and Rocas del Abra rock formations.

Tocancipá is also the location of the "largest smallest brewery in Colombia", the Bogotá Beer Company. On a tour of the brewery, visitors learn everything about the beer brewing process and the history of the company, and can sip a few samples. The Parque Jaime Duque amusement park, founded in 1983, is very close to the volunteer project and invites you to linger with its many attractions and great entertainment.
