We want to build a nursery school where children can learn in a child-friendly environment and be prepared for primary school. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
Singles
Couples
Families
Groups
50+
In Tanzania the school system is different to the one you have in the Western World. As soon as children attend a nursery school starting at the age of three they are treated like little adults. They have to sit in classrooms for hours and have to follow and repeat the instructions of the teachers. We want to create a nursery school where children have the opportunity to learn in a child-friendly environment, we want the children to enjoy their early childhood to the utmost and still be prepared with all the necessary knowledge for primary school.

Our project is still at the very beginning. We have a piece of land and building plans. Construction will start in July 2020. Our volunteers will help the professional builders with the construction work: you will have to carry sand buckets, as well as bricks. Depending when you come we might be working on the foundation, the walls, on the roof or already at the preparation for the interior. We want to built three class rooms, one kitchen, a storage, sanitary facilities, one office and once all this is finished we will start with our vegetable garden. We are looking forward to welcoming you helping on the construction side and taking the chance to learn about the way of constructing in Tanzania.

Next to the physical workers we need volunteers who have experience with various pedagogical concepts and early childhood education which we can apply to our nursery school. Help us to look into the different feasible concepts, to check the costings, to inform our donors about the process of the project as well as to find new donors and godparents for the children of our project.

Typical day

On working days you either take a motorbike for about 40 minutes and arrive at the project site at around 9am and finish around 3pm including a lunch break. You should bring your own food for lunch or you can buy it in the shops nearby.
Once you are on the building site the professional builders will show you what needs to be done. You may come with your own working clothes and gloves, or we can help you buying them on your first day.
If you support us working on the concept or raising funds please bring your own computer. You will work closely with Tini the founder of Viva Tanzania and the Hisia Nzuri Nursery school and discuss every step with him. The final goal is to implement the best concept at the school and make is self sustainable.
