Learn and work closely with the indigenous Mapuche community.
Design and execute your own project with the ability to work autonomously or closely with other team members.
Discover the beauty of the Araucanía Region in Chile, surrounded by scenic lakes, mountains, volcanoes.
We are a NGO ho support Mapuche artisans on the commercialization of their projects and the conservation of their indigenious culture. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

The Chol-Chol Foundation is a non-profit, non-governmental, fair trade organization, with no religious or political affiliations, dedicated to serving the Mapuche, rural population of the Araucanía Region in Chile, thus improving their lives and the future of their families. We accomplish this through training and workshops, human development projects, and commercialization of their artisan products. We work in order to the 10 principles of fair trade.

You will be working with our team members and directly with the artisans. You don't need to bring some special equipment.

You can help us with profound experience in one or more of the following fields:

  • communication/marketing
  • web and graphic
  • education/human development
  • culture/anthropology
  • Fair Trade
  • product and textile designers
  • photography

Usually you would develop your own project which you think would support the work of the organization. This project can include a range of activities in the above described fields. Past projects included artisan communication and outreach, photography, website development and maintenance, grant application, optimization of operational processes, obtaining increased market access and workshops with artisans. Besides your own projects you have the possibility to take over tasks, which are part of our daily business such as reception of tourists at our premises and sale of the artisans products, attendance at the artisans reunions or visits to the artisans houses.

We expect from volunteers to come with the motivation to be the change this people need, to use their different abilities and knowledge to help us to develop good projects to promote fair trade in Mapuche's crafts.

Typical day

You will work with us from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. with 1 hour of lunch.

We can't describe how a typical day here is, because every day is different, one day you'll be working directly with Mapuche artisans, the other you'll be helping us in our store at the Regional Museum, and some other days working on different projects.

Free-time activities

As a large university town, Temuco has much to offer to its guests. At night, there are plenty of restaurants and bars to explore and enjoy. On the weekends, museums and outdoor markets provide opportunities to learn more about the history and culture of the area. Temuco is also located within a few hours of mountains, volcanoes, beaches, lakes, hot springs, and much more, which provide endless weekend activities for the outdoor enthusiast.
