The program
Due to extreme poverty, gender bias towards males and ill health, thousands of children in India are given refuge in community-care centers and shelters run by various non-governmental organizations. The children who find themselves living at one of these facilities have often come from tremendously difficult and traumatic circumstances, leaving them distressed and detached from the joys of childhood we so often take for granted. The aim of this wonderful program then is to assist in helping with, and caring for these neglected children, and the assistance of international volunteers is desperately needed. Volunteers will participate in the daily routines and can make a great contribution just by being caring and giving the children some much-needed attention. By being there to offer care and compassion, volunteers are making a huge impact on the lives of these wonderful children.
Goals of this Project:
How you can help
By taking part in this wonderful program, volunteers will be based at one of several childrens centers in and around the suburbs of Delhi, including Noida and Gurgaon, and will assist by providing love, care, affection, warmth and education to the orphans. Love Volunteers on this project also assist the children with their education by taking extracurricular lessons, assisting with homework and helping with general education on life skills such as personal hygiene. In many of the projects sites, volunteers will have the option to live on-site or at the volunteer guest house. Volunteers who stay onsite do not need to travel every day to and from the project, and thus are able to spend more time with the children.
Volunteers will contribute in a number of ways on this program and can expect to undertake the following tasks:
A volunteer’s work day on this project will generally last between 4 and 5 hours and while we ask all volunteers to be flexible in this regard, a typical daily schedule is likely to go something like this:
8:30am Breakfast at the volunteer house
9:30am Travel to the project site
Placements are located within a 20 - 40 minute commute from the volunteer house using local transport. Volunteers will be shown the transport options during their orientation and can choose the one that suits them best (bus, metro or rickshaw).
9:50am Pre-start meeting with the project supervisor
10:00am VOLUNTEERING DUTIES START
Lunch can be taken at nearby cafes and restaurants which the local team will point out during the orientation session.
3:00pm VOLUNTEERING DUTIES END
3:10pm Debrief with project supervisor
3:30pm Free time before dinner to spend either in the volunteer house or out in the city
6:00pm Dinner at the volunteer house
Evening Free time to spend exploring the city or relaxing in the comfort of the volunteer house.
Volunteers are met on arrival into Delhi and taken to the volunteer house where they can meet with their hosts and fellow volunteers. The following day (Monday) an orientation session is held to introduce volunteers to the programs and their new environment. The session will cover safety, transportation, basic culture and history and is a chance to get to know other volunteers and the local team and ask any questions you may have.
Volunteers in Delhi also have the option of joining the one week orientation program before starting their placement (see details in the Additional Info. section).
Volunteers on this incredible program are accommodated in a fully equipped and comfortable Volunteer House in the pleasant residential area of Greater Kailash (colloquially known as ‘GK’) in South Delhi.
Rooms are shared by up to 4 volunteers in dormitory style (bunk) or single beds. Bathrooms have western-style facilities and hot showers and air-conditioning is provided for comfort in the summer months. Bed linen is provided so volunteers need only bring personal toiletries and towels. Super easy!
WiFi is available in the house so keeping in touch with friends and families is both free and easy. Satellite television, a fully equipped kitchen and laundry facilities mean that volunteers have everything they need for an enjoyable stay.
The volunteer house is conveniently located close to metro and bus stations as well as great local markets and shops so exploring the locality and city is easy and recommended!
Volunteers may also stay on-site at the project if preferred and available.Volunteers are provided with breakfast and dinner daily at the volunteer house throughout their placement and lunch can be purchased from the many local eateries near to the placement (the local team will show you their favourites during the orientation) and is both cheap and delicious.
Indian food is not restricted to the ubiquitous ‘take-aways’ Westerners might be used to and there will be something for every palate from delectable street food to rice based dishes and curries, naans and kebabs and so much more. Dishes are often vegetarian with lentils (known locally as dal) a common ingredient.
Delhi is an extremely cosmopolitan city and international cuisine is readily available as well.
This program is paused due to COVID-19
