After the long years of war in Cambodia, many children were left without their parents or other family members who could take care for them. As a result, many NGOs were established to help raise the Cambodian youth. Even though the wars have ended, many children are sent to live at these centers due to their family’s poverty and because their parents hope they will receive good education in the orphanage. We want to try our best to support families so that they can keep their children at home and want to do our best to help the children who are living in a child care centers already.

This program is organized for everyone who loves and enjoys working with children. Volunteers working in center help with general work. The type of work and working hours depend on the location and the project that the volunteer is participating in. Typically volunteers work for 4-6 hours per day.

Depending on your individual interests and skills, and on the needs of the local staff, your daily activities might include caring for children, playing games, help them with their homework, teaching English, drawing pictures, teaching geography or sports, singing and learning songs with the children or create activities for the kids. Volunteer also to help with practical tasks like preparing meals and cleaning up. In most of our placements the children are attending relevant public schools. They also have fixed activities, such as learning about the Khmer language, culture, and health; playing games and sports; reading, practicing traditional Khmer dance and sometimes discussing topics like moralist.

Typical day

You will work from Monday to Friday. A typical day starts at 8:30 am and ends around 4:30 pm.

There are 2 working shifts; morning 8:30am -11:30 and afternoon 2pm-5pm but you can decide if you want to do only in the morning or afternoon shift or if you want to do for both.

Free-time activities

Every volunteers will get the weekend off. This project we work in two destination so you chose to be in Phnom Penh or Siem Seap and it possible to combine to work at these two destinations.

There are many places volunteers can visit at the weekend.

Phnom Penh

You can visit the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda, Wat Phnom, National Museum, Killing Field... Volunteers can also travel by bus to visit many provinces at weekend or during national holiday such as to Siem Reap to see Angkor Wat, the famous historical place or Sihahouk Vill and Kampot to see beaches. Phnom Penh is a very international city, you will find a lot of western bars, supermarkets offer western articels, and especially the riverside is the spot for diplomats, travellers and international ngo-workers. But of course, you will also find the Cambodian Culture everywhere in the city. Walk around the different markets, try the food of the food stalls at the street or just walk around the streets, there is really always something to explore. Phnom Penh is a good base for trips through the country as it is very central.

Siem Reap

It is located in northwestern Cambodia, is the gateway to the world-famous Angkor temple complex, which includes the magnificent Angkor Wat. The province also contains a vibrant capital city boasting many luxury holets, beautifully-aged colonial buildings, a buzzing Pub Street, silk farms, markets, and much more. The city of Siem Reap, also the capital of the province, is a ‘must-visit’ destination for all visitors to Cambodia.
