Punto Luce is part of a national network created by Save the Children Italia with the objective of promoting development in areas in which life conditions and cultural and entertainment opportunities of minors remain scarce and scattered.  Punto Luce offers services aimed at combating educational poverty in many underprivileged neighborhoods in several Italian cities. In Naples, Punto Luce of Piano Terra was established in Rione Sanità. Punto Luce is all round socio-educational center open to children, adolescents and their families and offers, free of charge, recreational and educational activities to minors designed to contribute to personal growth and development.

Punto Luce
offers individual support services, the so-called “educational skills” ,designed to offer specific personalized goods and services. “Educational skills” are only available to minors selected in partnership with local institutions and Social Services. Activities proposed by Punto Luce for minors - age group 6-16 - for the academic year 2016/17 are: After school care divided for age groups, creativity workshops, reading classes, emotional and physical training, painting, music and fashion.

The area where volunteers will work has a big population density and mostly inhabitated by poor families, migrants and children that drop out of school during the legal age. It is very characteristique, dominated by the oldest market of the city and small shops and restaurants which make the best traditional Neapolitan food.

Volunteers leave in the heart of the historical centre, 20 minutes walking from placement. Volunteers share dorm with maximum other 7 volunteers of same gender. With the increasing of the touristic flow the historical centre of Naples has become safer.

Typical day

After the initial orientation, you will have usually an afternoon shift at your placement and will work for approximately 4 hours per day. Please note that start times and daily workload depends on the project that you are participating on - some activities run in the afternoon and volunteers on these placements will have the morning free. You may therefore plan daily activities which could include sightseeing, shopping or taking Italian language lessons.

Example of a typical day (Monday to Friday; weekends are usually free)

Morning: Leisure Time

3:30 - 7:00 PM  Regular After Care activities

After 8:00 PM  Leisure time

Based on the partner's need (i.e. visits, holidays) schedule may change accordingly.

Free-time activities

Volunteers have the weekends free. Italy is universally recognised for its history, art, culture, cuisine and natural beauty, so there is absolutely no shortage of things to see and do while in Naples or further afield in Italy! Naples has many UNESCO World Heritage sites and volunteers can fill their free time visiting the many historical sites and attractions, tasting the amazing cuisine, sipping espresso in the many café bars or simply exploring parts of Naples by wandering through the beautiful alleys. Rome, home to the Colosseum, Vatican and Sistine Chapel, is just an hour from Naples by train, and the ancient ruins of Pompeii or the gorgeous island of Capri are also just 45 minutes away. Nature lovers can hike the nearby Mt. Vesuvius and visit the beautiful Almalfi Coast to complete the “Walk of the Gods”. Volunteers staying for longer durations, or who wish to travel before or after their program, can visit areas further afield in Italy including; Venice, Cinque Terre, Florence, Milan, Pisa and so much more! Volunteers can make travel arrangements once in Naples, with the advice and guidance of our local staff.
