Not all the children get the same opportunity in the world, and Italy is one of the proof. A Save The Children Italia study came with the shocking result that around 20% of minors in Italy live in poverty and half of them in extreme poverty. In the South of Italy this condition involve around the 30% of the minors and in Campania Region is the 22%. With an impressive 19% Naples has one of the highest index of drop out from schools in Europe.
Centro La Tenda was established in the early 80’s to address a vast array of social issues such as, social marginalization, especially with regards to drug abuse and homeless assistance. Over the years, the Center has become a reference point in the Sanità neighborhood, one of the areas of Naples with the highest poverty and crime rates. The Center started working on social marginalization prevention and on projects focused on establishing the rule of law tailored to the younger local community and especially within the public school system. In light of this prevention strategy, activities have a dual objective: 1) enhance self-awareness with respect to personal needs and 2) increase responsibilization in relation to behaviors that may promote social and personal wellbeing.Activities are focused on services administered to minors in the after-school care area especially in relation to creativity workshops, theatre, arts, sports and family support. The engagement is centered on after-school programs addressing the needs of minors living in neighborhoods at risk of social marginalization. These activities include: homework support, game & recreational, art & craft and street activities. Your engagement on the basis of your skills may include:- Support to educational and recreational activities including participation to games and creativity workshops;
- Communication and fund-raising activities.
The area where volunteers will work has a big population density and mostly inhabitated by poor families, migrants and children that drop out of school during the legal age. It is very characteristique, dominated by the oldest market of the city and small shops and restaurants which make the best traditional Neapolitan food.
Volunteers leave in the heart of the historical centre, 20 minutes walking from placement. Volunteers share dorm with maximum other 7 volunteers of same gender. As alternative you could arrange your own accommodation and we'll provide you a special price.
Typical day
After the initial orientation, you will have usually an afternoon shift at your placement and will work for approximately 4 hours per day. Please note that start times and daily workload depends on the project that you are participating on - some activities run in the afternoon and volunteers on these placements will have the morning free. You may therefore plan daily activities which could include sightseeing, shopping or taking Italian language lessons.

Italy is universally recognised for its history, art, culture, cuisine and natural beauty, so there is absolutely no shortage of things to see and do while in Naples or further afield in Italy! Naples has many UNESCO World Heritage sites and volunteers can fill their free time visiting the many historical sites and attractions, tasting the amazing cuisine, sipping espresso in the many café bars or simply exploring parts of Naples by wandering through the beautiful alleys. Rome, home to the Colosseum, Vatican and Sistine Chapel, is just an hour from Naples by train, and the ancient ruins of Pompeii or the gorgeous island of Capri are also just 45 minutes away. Nature lovers can hike the nearby Mt. Vesuvius and visit the beautiful Almalfi Coast to complete the “Walk of the Gods”. Volunteers staying for longer durations, or who wish to travel before or after their program, can visit areas further afield in Italy including; Venice, Cinque Terre, Florence, Milan, Pisa and so much more! Volunteers can make travel arrangements once in Naples, with the advice and guidance of our local staff.
