Clean Ocean Supporter

Neiafu, Tonga show on map
Sailing in Tonga extending our Fast Track Fiji program to neighboring countries.
Delivering education on outer islands, community outreach and data collection. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

The project

Volunteers are crew members aboard our flagship S.V. Moana. We sail between the islands of Tonga cleaning beaches recording what we find and working with the communities we encounter along the way.

We focus on solutions and offer hands on presentations processing the waste plastics we find into alternative fuels or building supplies.

We have as well developed educational resources and best practice guidelines for presenting along the way.
On-board there is a Blest desktop sized plastic to oil processor which gasifies waste plastic to make a light sweet crude oil, usable in any diesel engine as a diluttant.

For other types of waste plastic we present the Eco-brick model of stuffing PET bottles with chip wrappers, food packaging etc, than stacking them with holding brackets which is a new base for multiple structures such as waste collection centers, water tanks and buildings.

The developing island nations we work in have little to no waste management available, education is poor and resources for local systems are limited. We work alongside the communities we visit to provide hands on demonstrations of how to keep their shorelines clean, and locally utilize the waste plastics collected.

Volunteer Work

Our volunteers assist with all sides, some activities include, but are not limited to:

  • Crew member aboard our flagship S.V. Moana, assisting with sailing to outer islands, navigating, maintenance etc.
  • Performing beach clean-ups and data collection.
  • Quantifying results of plastics found.
  • Community engagement and education.
  • Demonstrate on a variety of local processing solutions.

Volunteers will be working alongside our Capt, local staff and at times visiting scientists. We engage with communities throughout the south pacific islands, who for the most part speak English and French.

Volunteers are expected to work as a team, be upbeat and positive regarding cleaning the ocean and able to adapt to daily chores. We provide the tools you require for all jobs, a cabin aboard our vessel for accommodation and all basic food for three meals a day.

No specialty equipment is required from the volunteers. However if there are specialty dietary requirements, we must understand prior to booking so we can asses if it is achievable to accommodate.

Typical day

Each day is dependent on the weather as we are sailing. Normally we can plan up to 4 days in advance, however some days still surprise us!
We change between cleaning different shorelines facing different directions and recording what we find. All plastics are placed into our data collection form which helps with essential information for governments, businesses and international NGO's.

When anchored close to a community we engage with them and present our educational resources and offer guidance on how to keep their shorelines clean.

When appropriate we will bring our plastic to oil processor ashore for a presentation gasifying plastics to alternative fuels.
We as well demonstrate and assist the communities build waste collection centers, water tanks and other structures using the Eco-brick model.

Free-time activities

You are sailing on a boat throughout Tonga, use your imagination, the opportunities are endless!

There are world class waves, marine parks, endless scuba diving opportunities with live coral reefs and large populations of tropical fish.

The mainland has many opportunities for those looking to get off the water, cultural exchange and village visits, 4wd, waterfall hikes, kayaking and the most magical part of Tonga in these months, swimming with humpback whales!

Tonga is a less visited destination with much to offer. It is ff the tourist beaten track, but adventure awaits.

The country's main draw is swimming with humpback whales, an experience not able to be described in words. We highly recommend you take advantage of this special experience.
