Join a team of international students working on early childhood development and education projects run alongside Save the Children.

All activities aim to achieve United Nations Sustainable Development Goals #4 Quality Education, #5 Gender Equality, and  #10 Reduced Inequalities.

As a participant on this program your role will be to support staff at Save the Children with daily tasks which may include facilitating English lessons, assisting with homework as well as improving English through reading exercises, sports coaching and art & craft lessons.

Creating awareness and opportunities of engagement in environmental care is another large focus of this program, you may be involved in various workshops.

The work you contribute to is essential for the development of local children, ensuring they are reaching the suggested milestones.

As an intern you will also have the opportunity to learn about fundraising and its importance for global non-profit, Save the Children. 

You will be motivated to generate new solutions and propose new elements to improve educational development of the children and locals in Puerto Morelos.


Interns are required to complete weekly assignments and host leadership days. While on program, interns are supported by a dedicated mentor.

This internship includes three online courses which must be completed in order to obtain a certificate offered in partnership with the University of Richmond in the United States:

  • Community Development
  • Leadership Training
  • Career Development 

After successful completion of this internship, you will be offered two career coaching sessions as well as gain access to a job portal.

Gain valuable experience and collect data for a dissertation or thesis. This program offers virtual check ins with a research supervisor who has extensive experience and credentials in this sector. As a research intern, your main focus will be collecting or analyzing data and writing a paper.

Typical day

Participants are expected to remain flexible as project work changes based on weather as well as needs of our project partners.

Estimated Schedule:

8-10am: Work in the community 

12pm: Lunch

1pm - 4pm: Work in community/classroom prep/mentor sessions

6pm: Dinner

9pm: Bed Time

Interns have weekly check in's with your mentor.

Require­ments

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

You need to speak English (basic level)

No restrictions. Helping hands from all over the world are welcome.
Other Skills
No skills required, all training is provided online 8 weeks prior to departure. If you are not fluent in Spanish, you will be required to take a minimum 20 hours of Spanish lessons in country which is at an additional cost.
Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday

Airport Pickup at Cancun International Airport

Airport pick up is provided from Cancun Airport within a specified time period. 

Accommodation

Puerto Morelos is the oldest port city in the Mexican Caribbean, our base is located on the beachfront about 5km from the town centre. 

Accommodation facilities are shared dormitories and can be considered basic.

Breakfast is prepared by participants and lunch and dinner is prepared by a local cook. Most dietary requirements can be catered for.

Limited access at the project site
What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Cancun International Airport (CUN) in Cancun. We assist you to find cheap flights to Mexico.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Mexico provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Mexico you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Mexico.

The organization charges its fees in EUR. The price table in USD is subject to currency fluctuation. GVI will let you know about the final price during your application process.
Deposit (15%)
The deposit is simply to reserve your volunteer placement. Payments are handled by PayPal, our trusted global payment provider. If you don't have a PayPal account, you can also pay using a credit card.
Final Payment (85%)
Your final payment will be agreed with GVI during the application process. Common solutions are either via bank transfer or a cash payment at the project site.
