Help with projects from our working on land and snorkelling in shallow waters to beach cleans and community development This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

At SCML, we are grateful to have an extraordinarily strong volunteer base! We invite you to join our community of enthusiastic volunteers who share a passion for protecting open space and the environment. As a small, grassroots organization, volunteers are integral to our success. You can help with projects from our working on land and snorkelling in shallow waters to beach cleans and community development.

  • School development:

Our main concern is the younger generation. Once we can help the local children to learn more, we can create a whole new possibilities for a better future, more educated, more ecological, more prepared. In the village there is one simple local school, built by another NGO in 2008 and managed by the villagers. At the moment the school provides only basic primary education for children between 5 and 12 years old. After 12 the only option for those children is move to Sihanoukville, but most of local families here cannot afford all the expenses to send their youngsters away. Most of them quit school and start to work. Our plan is to expand the school. Fixing, painting, changing furniture and learning materials, donating computers, musical instruments, art equipment. Expand the school into a high school, where the pupils will stay longer at the school and learn more about English, music, arts, information technology, biology and the environment.

  • Plastic Police Patrol (PPP):

On a monthly basis we organize the school children to clean the beach and village with us. Is a beautiful moment of fun, education, and conservation.

  • Plastic Recycling System:

We are raising funds to build in the village a proper recycling plant where we can recycle all the waste plastic on island. This project will also create three jobs for locals. Basically the villagers will bring us all the waste plastic, we buy it, we recycle it, we turn it into objects and souvenirs and sell it back to tourists, making money to pay our staff and buy more plastic, and therefore creating a synergic cycle.

  • Rubbish Management:

At the moment the village is hiring a boat to take the rubbish to the main land, but many locals are still following the old fashion solution to burn it all. We are planning to build an incinerator, we will then teach the locals how to operate it properly and we will then turn part of this trash into electricity for the village. Maybe enough for community lighting.

Typical day

Daily events can vary seasonally due to weather, however on a daily basis we can be involved with the school regeneration program, beach cleaning, cleaning the village areas, snorkel tours and in water cleaning, and as soon as we have finished raising the funds we will be running the plastic recycling plant.

Free-time activities

The bay is great for swimming, snorkelling and just hanging out. You can go on a trek around the island, and there is a private waterfall to visit on your days off.

You can just relax and socialise or spend time out on the beach. It is a quite village however there are restaurants and bars open at night. There are shops and internet. If you bring Cambodian sim card, make sure it is a Smart phone card as no others work on the island.
