As a coordinator of the toddlers you organize the lessons of the toddlers:

  • Developing themes, preparing lessons, organizing corner work, thinking about group activities, etc.
  • You help to make the timetables and divide the tasks of the team.
  • Support with the organization of special events such as Christmas, birthdays, etc.
  • Helping to keep the godparents informed of the children’s development.
  • You help volunteers with their preparations and guide students during their internship.
  • You support where necessary with administrative tasks.

For this position, it is important that you are active on the project for at least 12 months.

The first month you will be guided by the previous responsible, the last month you will train the next coordinator.

You will join a team of alternating volunteers from different countries and a permanent team.
The permanent team consists of several Peruvian teachers, a physiotherapist, a permanent cook and a driver. The entire project is managed by its founder, Stefanie Van Erps, originally from Belgium and living in Peru for 10 years now.

Typical day

8:45 am: short meeting with all the teacher, coordinators and volunteers

9:20 am: arrival of the kids with disabilities, breakfast and start of one-two-one classes
11:45 am - 12:00 pm: lunch with kids with disabilities, afterwards they are brought home
12:15 - 1:15 pm: lunch time
1:15 pm: arrival preschool kids and primary schoolkids
1:15 - 2:00 pm: lunch time kids
2:00 - 4:00 pm: lessons preschool kids and primary schoolkids
4:00: preschool kids are brought home
4:00 - 5:00 pm: football, volleyball or dance for the primary schoolkids
5:00 pm: walk the primary schoolkids home

Free-time activities

On the weekend you can visit the ancient city Cusco 2,5 hours by taxi.

To the world famous ancient city Machu Picchu and Rainbow Mountain it's 3 hours away from Cusco and you can find local agency to arrange the trip.
There're some trails around the village you could go on a hike too!
For local tours you can contact Travel Agency Casa Lena (canyoning, puenting, rafting, river tubing,
horseback riding, biking and so on).

Require­ments

In order to join the program you need to be at least 18 years old on the program start date. There might be exemptions if you can provide the permission of your legal guardian(s) or if your are accompanied by your parents.

You speak English or Dutch and have a decent knowledge of Spanish (min. B1).

Time Commitment
Your helping hand will be required on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 09:00 - 17:00

What's Included

Airport Pickup at Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport
  • With a private taxi:
    If you prefer that a taxi picks you up at the airport/your hotel and drops you off at the project, it is possible. At this moment (July 2022) this costs 120 soles (2.5 hours), to be paid to the driver.
  • By public transport: a taxi or van (colectivo) in ARCOPATA (a street in Cusco).
    These taxis or vans drive this route on a daily basis. Do not take a taxi somewhere else, because it will cost a lot more.
Taxis leave when they have four passengers; you pay 25 soles per person.
Vans leave when they have 9 to 11 passengers; you pay 20 soles per person.
A taxi will be full faster and will leave sooner. It also drives faster, so you will reach Curahuasi sooner. The taxi terminal is in the same street is the terminal for vans, but a not in the same place.
Accommodation
Volunteers who arrange their accommodation through Oye LENA can get a room at the volunteer house of Casa Lena, 15 minutes from the centre of Curahuasi by foot. 
There are private rooms and shared rooms. The bathroom, kitchen and living room are shared
The project takes place in the classrooms on the ground floor of the building.

  • Weekday lunch our cook Diofe will cook for all the volunteers and teachers.
  • Dinner and weekend you can go to the village, prepare by yourself or cook with other volunteers.

What's NOT included?
Visa, flights, travel insurance or vaccinations are NOT included in the program fees.
Flight Tickets
The nearest airport is Alejandro Velasco Astete International Airport (CUZ) in Cuzco. We assist you to find cheap flights to Peru.
Travel Insurance
Going abroad is an adventure and it is always best to be prepared. Sudden illness or injury, cancellation or theft - a travel insurance for Peru provides security and is a plus to have.
Vaccines
If you are intending to volunteer in Peru you should seek medical advice before starting your social journey. Check your required vaccinations for Peru.
