This 4 weeks programm is a unique way to engage into local community while learning about the different methods used to restore the health of the coral reefs in Bali. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
Explore the health status of coral reefs around the island of Bali and get a deeper understanding of the tropical marine ecosystem in general. See how climate change and ocean acidification impact the ecosystem and coral reefs and why it is particularly important to restore the health status of coral reefs in order to ensure and secure the survival of all living being.

How this course program works

This 4 weeks program is a combination of lecturers held at Udayana University in Bali and several field studies. During these well structured lectures you will gain special theoretical knowledge about Coral Reefs in Indonesia and get prepared for your research trips. You get the chance to visit many sights and NGOs to learn more about the different approaches used to restore the coral reefs around the island of Bali. Together with the local community you will work on solutions, that are essential for the future of coral reefs and marine life in Bali.

Within this course you can achieve up to 5 ECTS points for your university. You will learn about the Coral Reef Ecosystem and their ecological characteristics and organisms.

The field trips

During the field trips you will you drive together with the group several organizations learning more about their efforts to restore the reefs that have been destroyed. You will visit local communities, that are very active in sustainable tourism and integrate their coral reef restoration into the tourism activities. You will also dive together with the conservation team in the open water to investigate and monitor the reefs health status. Therefore we recommend participants to do their open water license before the start of the program. If participants do not have an open water license, they are welcome to investigate the reefs via snorkeling. Many of the places will be visited while low tide, so they are easier to reach.

What volunteers can expect

Participants should not expect a daily working routine, as the program is more focused on learning, than providing a service to the community. At the end of your studies you will work on research topics together with the group, that will focus on a particular issue. The finding will eventually be presented to the conservation organizations and the community.

You will live together in a group in a villa in the South of Bali and will have your own transportation to the university as well to the excursions and field study.
