Volunteers with a passion for creative and performing arts can get involved with teaching art, dance, drama, and music. Whether you are on a gap year, volunteer vacation, or career break, you will have an important role to play in the lives of local people.

The majority of your time as a volunteer will be spent working alongside local artists in Mombasa.

They will teach you local pottery calabash, ushanga and the will locals show you how to make earrings, bracelets, and other jewelry using materials such as shells and beads.

Volunteers will also learn how to make african attire and how to make dress or shirt, a traditional decorative fabric.

Volunteers then put the skills they have gained to share with others.

For those interested in learning about African dance and drumming, you can take lessons to gain greater insight into local culture.

These lessons are perfect for enthusiastic and creative volunteers.

Music is at the heart of the local culture in Mombasa, so those with a passion for music will find this placement both enjoyable and rewarding.

Volunteers with relevant occupations or skill sets, such as dancers, musicians, theatre performers can all make a valuable contribution to this project through sharing their skills with the local people.

When volunteering on the program, volunteers have the opportunity to teach small classes based on certain skills that include  singing, dancing and gymnastics.

Depending on where your talents and interests volunteers can get involved in

Art – teaching the children and teenagers art including painting and drawing

Large murals – painting educational murals in classroom.

Dance – teaching the children different dance techniques

Music – teaching children and teenagers how to play different musical instruments, from the guitar to the piano, as well as singing lessons with different churches

Acting – developing the acting abilities of the local community. This is a fantastic way to encourage them to speak English through role playing.Volunteers may also help to write scripts and direct short plays and sketches.

In order to assist with the teaching of the above activities, you need to have skills in the specific areas. Volunteers will be working alongside staff during these sessions.

Depending on what areas you choose to get involved in, you will have the opportunity to prepare the teenagers to perform and showcase their talents in front of the community.

Please note that the specific tasks involved in this project can vary depending on the cultural and artistic activities going on within the community at the time of your program. This means you should come prepared to provide assistance wherever your support is most needed.
