The volunteer project in Ecuador is supervised by community members from Nanegal, a small town in the middle of the Ecuadorian Cloud Forest. Many years ago they started the operation of an eco-lodge in the mountains of the cloud forest. Owners of the lodge come from the Nanegal community and are keen to support them and, with the help of foreign volunteers, do development work for the community and the local kindergarten. Volunteer projects in South America play an important role in promoting children's development and education.

As a volunteer, you will not only be amazed by the scenic beauty of this region, but you will certainly be infected by the great hospitality, the lively music, and the enthusiasm of the people. You work directly with the locals, who give you ample opportunities to get to know rural Ecuador in its originality, develop your Spanish skills and gain insider knowledge about the cloud forest.

Tolerance and openness to other cultures are important prerequisites for participating in this volunteer project. You will be rewarded with unforgettable experiences and insights into an Ecuador that tourists will not see.

Typical day

You help with the nursery and look after babies and toddlers aged 0 to 6 years. The educators urgently need the support of volunteers to ensure adequate care, development and education of the children. Previous knowledge in this area is not required, but you should like to work with young children, be patient and open to cultural differences. Some of the children are malnourished or come from very difficult family circumstances. Empathy and attention are therefore equally important qualities that you should bring with you.

Intermediate Spanish skills are required to ensure optimal integration into the volunteer project. Volunteers with basic Spanish work with very young children aged 0-2 years.

Other activities: The work in the kindergarten can sometimes be exhausting and there are volunteers, for whom the morning activity seems sufficient. Nonetheless, there is also the opportunity to be helpful and creative in the afternoon. Self-initiative and proactivity is required here! For example, In the past, volunteers have conducted a variety of workshops. This is especially suitable for volunteers who work in the project for a longer period of time. The workshops included, for example, English lessons for adults and / or children, handicraft lessons, football games, environmental education lessons, homework clubs, and care for children who have special needs. In fact, there are many ways to get involved in a proactive and creative way!

Free-time activities

You can spend the weekends relaxing, swimming in the river, doing sports, hiking, enjoying the outdoors or participating in activities with the local community.

For longer trips (e.g. weekend) we recommend a visit to Quito, the country's capital. With its rich pre-Columbian history, Quito was founded on the ruins of an Inca city, and nowadays offers everything a modern traveler may need. Quito remains one of the best preserved historic city centers in Latin America and UNESCO declared it a world heritage site. This huge city stretches over a fabulous Andean valley surrounded by volcanic peaks. Among its streets, you can find 40 churches and chapels, 16 convents and monasteries with their respective cloisters, 17 squares, 12 convent and refractory courtyards, 12 museums and innumerable beautiful patios.

On a day-trip you can also visit the "Middle of the World", the place with the line that divides the planet earth in the northern and southern hemisphere. An amazing place and a Must See!

Further north is Otavalo, the largest indigenous market in the world. To the south, you can visit Latacunga and the Cotopaxi National Park, with the very high volcano of the same name. Further southeast the cities of Ambato and Baños are worth a visit, with the spectacular view of the Tungurahua volcano, which can be climbed to the top.
Especially Baños is real fun place to visit due to countless of sports and adrenaline activities.
