Assisting with teaching, extra lessons for struggling students and education with our local teaching staff. Help us improve the general education standards in Rubuguri. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

In Rubuguri, we have started up programmes in various "areas of need". As a Footsteps volunteer, you will have a chance to experience volunteering at all of our ongoing projects in the area, from teaching at the primary school to assisting with health and medical care at the clinic, hosting reading classes or public health seminars at the library or managing the community centre

The school

Volunteering in the education field, you will work primarily at the School of Hope. A small private school in Rubuguri, started up by a local teacher and supported by Footsteps Through Africa. This is a very small, basic school with limited infrastructure. It was started up with the intention of providing kids in the community with good quality education for a low cost. The School of Hope caters for students in the community who cannot afford schooling at the government schools in the area. Students attending school here are asked to pay whatever they can afford, even if this means the schooling is given for free - putting the well being of the children first.

Volunteer work

While volunteering here, you will spend the majority of your time assisting the local teachers at the school as well as further educating them on different teaching methods. You will also have the opportunity to spend some time working at the close by government school, a much larger school, with an average of 90 students per teacher! Giving you the chance to see and learn about the general standard of education at this type of facility. In addition to that, you are able to host reading classes and extra lessons in our community library, where many students and community members will attend.

As a volunteer with Footsteps Through Africa, you will work hand in hand with the community to make our projects as successful and impactful as possible and help us to reach our goals.

What you can expect

You will be accommodated at our sister company, Karungi Camp, which is a rustically beautiful, locally run lodge in Rubuguri. This will be your home for the duration of your stay. You will be provided with 3 meals per day, a comfortable bed and a (sometimes) hot shower! You will have the opportunity to meet and work with Gordy, our Footsteps Manager, who lives at Karungi Camp. Gordy is always around to make sure you feel at home and are enjoying your time with us. Additionally, he organises and coordinates all if your optional activities in the area.

Typical day

The school of hope is open 5 days a week. During those days, you will spend the majority of your day at the school (occasionally spending a day at the government school). You will work with and teach alongside the permanent teachers. In addition to that, you will further educate the local teaching staff to improve the teaching standards and promote a broader knowledge of teaching methods at the school. You will also spend a day or 2 per week hosting reading classes and extra lessons at the community library.

Although you are volunteering in the education field, you are more than welcome to spend time at any one of our other projects in the area. If you feel like you need a break from the school, you can go to do some agriculture, guiding or maintenance at the community centre, play a game of soccer with the kids, or go on one of the many hikes in the surrounding area to free your mind.

Friday's are 'market day' in Rubuguri, when people from DRCongo, Rwanda and surrounding vilages all come to Rubuguri to set up temporary shops, selling anything from food to clothes, kitchen supplies, arts and crafts or even goats and pigs. We encourage all of our volunteers to get involved in the market day to get to know a bit more about the way of life here.

Weekends are usually free for our volunteers, when you will spend time exploring the area, doing trips to Kisoro town or getting involved in a couple of the optional activities available.

Please keep in mind the school holidays in 2018 are from 5 - 27 May. If you wish to volunteer with us over this time, you can focus on extra classes for the students that wish to attend, alternatively, you can spend some time working at one of our other projects in the area.

07:30: Short walk to the school  (±20minutes).
08:00: Assist with breakfast for the students
08:30: Begin class

13:30 - 14:15: Lunch break. Join the rest of the teachers for lunch at school, or return to Karungi Camp for lunch with the rest of the volunteers. (Other volunteers will return from their activities at the same time for lunch break).
16:00: End of school day
17:00: If it is a day where you hosting  reading classes of extra lessons, you will head across to the library and prepare, alternatively this is the end of day and you can head back to Karungi or go exploring :)

After dinner, the rest of the day is yours. All volunteers are required to fill out a daily logbook, explaining how you spent your day, progress made and general feedback. As long as that has been done, you are welcome to go across to the local village bar for a game of pool and a drink and make some friends from the community.

Free-time activities

In your free time during the day, there are many hiking trails surrounding the village, all offering magnificent sceneries. This is great to clear your mind, get a bit of exercise and have some chill time.
