This project provides opportunities for girls from remote mountain villages to continue their education to secondary level in a supportive environment. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

About the Program

This program supports Education For All, a charity set up to provide educational opportunities for girls from the Berber Communities in the Atlas Mountains.  Volunteers are needed to help at the boarding houses which have been built to provide a safe home for the girls during school terms, and a place where they will receive the educational and pastoral support they need.  Volunteers with the following areas of expertise are needed:

  • English teachers
  • French teachers
  • TEFL / EFL / TESL experience would be particularly welcome
  • Teachers of all subjects who could work with the girls in small groups
  • People willing to spend time with the girls, encouraging their confidence in speaking English and French through conversation
  • Computer skills
  • Life skills - particularly mentoring and supporting the girls in their studies and preparation for leaving school

Why this is important

The aim of Education for All is to enable girls from rural communities in the Atlas Mountains to continue their education beyond primary school level.  At present, very few girls from rural communities in Morocco continue their education after primary school. The nearest secondary colleges are too far to travel every day from the villages where they live. Their parents are too poor to afford lodgings near to the colleges and they worry about entrusting their daughters to the care of existing facilities. The available accommodation is usually over-stretched and often inadequate.

In an attempt to address this problem, boarding houses have been built for selected girls from these rural communities.  The boarding houses are located close to secondary schools and provide a safe home for the girls while they complete their education.  Each boarding house has a house mother from the girls’ own culture, and at the boarding houses the girls are given both social and economic support to enable them to make a success of their studies.

About the Boarding Houses

Through the boarding houses girls gain access to secondary education and the chance to fulfil their potential in an environment that promotes academic study and social understanding. The goal is to make a difference to the lives of these girls now, and thus change many more in the future.  Their firm belief is that girls’ education is important, both for the girls themselves and for future generations – their vision is that by educating a girl you also educate the next generation.

The first boarding house was opened in 2008 in the town of Asni.  After ten years, the project is clearly a success – five boarding houses are now in operation, and some of the first girls to benefit from the system have progressed through college and lycee and are now at university.  The aim is to build further boarding houses as required, to enable as many girls as possible from these remote regions to achieve their educational potential.

Your Role as a Volunteer

Volunteers will be based at the boarding house in Asni.  Latifa (the house mother) welcomes female volunteers to help her in providing pastoral and educational support to the girls.  The volunteer will work with the house- mother and other staff at the boarding house, and will provide small group support to the girls.  Each volunteer will have a placement outline individually tailored to make the best use of their skills and experience, and this will detail the precise work they will do.

Due to the girls' cultural background, we are unfortunately unable to place male volunteers on this program.

Typical day

Every day is different and volunteers should be prepared to be flexible.

Morning lessons at school are from 8.00 – 12.00 and afternoon lessons from 13.30 – 17.30. However neither students nor teachers are in school for the whole day. A student’s timetable varies from day to day but averages out at about 5 hours a day, with slightly less for the younger girls.  When they do not have lessons students return home to the boarding house.

The school timetables appear to be structured to give teachers a coherent block of time in school; the result of this is that students’ timetables can be quite fragmented, and they may have to go to school at three or four different times every day.

All children return home for lunch which is the main meal of the day, and volunteers will eat lunch with them. They also return home if for some reason their teacher is away.

Volunteers will have a timetable which enables them to work with small groups of girls when they are in the boarding house, giving support in language learning, school work in general, and pastoral issues. Some volunteers' placement outlines may involve a pastoral rather than educational focus, and their working hours may involve more sessions in the evenings and less during the day

Details on Arrival

The boarding houses accept volunteers during the school terms. Exact dates will be given to volunteers during the application process.

Free-time activities

Asni is a reasonably quiet market town in the mountains.

Volunteers can enjoy visiting the market and going to the local hammam (Turkish bath).  There are many beautiful walking trails into the mountains - our local partners can advise on safe routes.

Most volunteers spend at least one weekend in Marrakech, with its museums and many tourist attractions, and another at the mountain village of Imlil where our local partners are based at the heritage hotel.
