Why are we looking for an Electrician .... The trust was built in 2007, since then there has not been a 'real' professional that has seen to the wiring through this building. It's essential that we do not shut down to ensure we can still provide our English schooling. But we want to avoid the worst and never want to witness an electrical failure. The locals do not have the knowledge or training that the West or other professionals hold, so there 'quick-fixes' are literally a quick 2 day fix and we are presented with the same issues...

A new position at the Bukit Lawang Trust has just become available. The team in North Sumatra is looking for an experienced and hands-on electrician pro, ready to get stuck into the nitty-gritty works of an Indonesian concrete building! You would be greeted by the rolling hills of the jungle, dramatic thunderstorms and the haphazard yet happy way of life all Indonesians follow. Living on the edge of the jungle, and far from any cities means that this opportunity is perfect for someone willing to escape the hustling and bustling life of the city. Although we are looking for an experienced electrician, this will be a new challenge entirely due to the Indonesian way of getting things done.

Bukit Lawang - the location is second to none. We are on the border of the national park which is home to several critically endangered species, I.e. The Sumatran Orangutan, Elephant & Tiger.. There is no place on the rest of earth like this. It is a true blessing to wake up to the rolling jungle hills!

Throughout your stay here you will be with the rest of the team. English and Conservation Volunteers along with the 7 local staff that work Mon - Friday at the trust.

What is expected? A 'Can do' attitude and willing to tackle these challenges head-on. There can be local support if needed, for instance, buying materials. From us, we will get you on the front foot right away. Can help you organise trekking with our locally sorted out guides, advise on new villages to explore, get you exploring the hot spots in Bukit Lawang and beyond!

Private airport pick-up, accommodation, and two meals a day are included in the volunteer fee. Orangutan treks, Elephant washing/trekking, jungle river rafting are activities all found on the doorstep of Bukit Lawang.

If interested please don’t hesitate to get in touch; send us your experience to date and we will be in touch

Typical day

There is not set a task for each day as the current people working at the trust are not Electricians or have any experience in that field. All we know is that the wiring within the building all needs looking at as we have temperamental lights, regular blackouts and wiring that is questionable.

Each day will be a challenge, but one you can have fun with!

Free-time activities

Bukit Lawang is rich in activities. Most famous for its Jungle Trekking to see the Sumatran Orangutans, but is also rich in wildlife, incredible scenery and neighbouring villages which will also take your breath away.

There is something for everyone. Whether you just want to read a book by the river or go on a 3day trek through the jungle - anything and everything is on your doorstep.
