Experience the typical Sinhalese lifestyle and culture while learning the skills to communicate and handle elephants. An apt opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

The project

Volunteering Solutions offers a unique volunteer opportunity for wildlife enthusiasts to contribute their time and effort for the welfare and conservation of elephants in Sri Lanka. As the name suggests, this project is dedicated towards taking care of the huge friendly animals, along with the welfare of the surrounding community people in Sri Lanka.

The location

Volunteers are placed in an elephant camp, located in a picturesque small town of Kegalle, which is around 2-3 hrs from the capital city of Colombo. Surrounded by hills and lush green forests, this placement will give you the experience of living in remote areas and witness the typical lifestyle of Sinhalese culture; making work and volunteering abroad experience like no other.

Volunteer work

Volunteers under this program will engage themselves in cleaning the sheds and the treatment of elephants who are sick and suffering from ailments. They’ll also look after their cleanliness, food and medicine intake etc. They will also assist the vets if and when required. Being closely associated with the mahouts, volunteers will also learn to communicate with the elephants.

Volunteers would also get to share some love with the kids of the community orphanage while teaching and playing games with them. These kids don’t get to interact much with people from outside the community, thus the interaction with the volunteers is tremendously meaningful for them.

Volunteers joining the elephant camp program in Sri Lanka must get ready for some really exciting days ahead. The daily tasks at the project include :

  • Help in Cleaning work in animal/ elephant enclosures.
  • Cleaning of the garden and assisting in landscape work.
  • Help bathe the elephants in the river.
  • Help vet doctors if needed.
  • Spend time in the eco garden where fruit and vegetables for the elephants are grown by volunteers.
  • Learn about Sinhalese culture, language and cuisine.
  • Teach and play with kids in the orphanage
The minimum duration to join this program is 1 week, and can go up to 24 weeks.

Typical day

Volunteers work at the placement over the weekdays and have weekends off. Since, the project involves working with elephants, the day starts early morning with bathing of elephants and feeding them breakfast. This usually, begins at around 06:30 in the morning, when volunteers will accompany the mahaouts to take the elephants to river side and help them in bathing.

On return, volunteer will break for breakfast and getting ready for the renaming days tasks. Starting from around 08:30 in the morning, volunteers will help in various activities at the camp throughout the day; such as cleaning sheds, help vet doctors as and when required, cleaning the garden and farm area, etc.

Since, this program, also, includes working with children in the local community, a portion of the day is spent in this activity as well. Volunteers can spend time at orphanage where they can play with children or help them with their studies. A crisp outline of a typical day's activities is as below:

  • Mon to Fri : Volunteer work
  • Early morning volunteer work - 06:30 am to 08:00 (take elephants for bath and feed them breakfast)
  • Breakfast - 08:00 am
  • Working hours at the placement - 06:30 am to 05:00 pm
  • Lunch - 12:00 pm onwards
  • Dinner - 06:00 pm onwards
The same volunteer work schedule continues for the coming weeks

  • Weekends : Free to explore the city

Free-time activities

Kegalle is a small, but fascinating town in Sri Lanka, and has a lot of quick weekend getaway options. Volunteers will be free during the evenings on weekdays, when they can choose to stay back at their accommodation and discuss their day's work with other volunteers, or can choose to explore the town and its local market places.

Over the weekends, volunteers can plan quick getaway trips to some of the most recommended places in Sri Lanka; such as Kandy lake, Temples of Anuradhapura, riverfronts, waterfalls, and a lot more. You can coordinate with the local coordinator to arrange your weekend trip to these places.
