Share your knowledge and expertise in a growing local village whose people have great passion for learning. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:

  • Impart and share knowledge with local youths and children through creative fun learning
  • Contribute to environmental conservation in the community permaculture garden
  • Help to empower the local community through education and sustainable efforts
  • Great opportunity for cultural exchange with locals and fellow volunteers
  • Enjoy the natural beauty of the tranquil Gesang Village and learn the East Javanese culture straight from the locals

The program was initially established in 2014 as a community service initiative to provide the learning opportunity for self-empowerment and capacity improvement for the village children and young people in Lumajang, East Java, Indonesia.  The initiative has grown vastly from the first it was established. It has now opened new facilities, teaches more children and started new activities such as permaculture garden to empower local villagers and improve their economy as well as promoting sustainable agriculture in the area.

In this program, you are expected to share your knowledge and skills with the locals as a contribution to their empowerment as a thriving community through their volunteerism and social enterprise program.

Surrounded by lush greens and mountainous backdrop, Lumajang boasts picturesque sights unlike any other. It is the home of scenic caves such as Piket Nol and Goa Tetes, as well as Mount Semeru and a pristine shoreline on its southern borders.

Typical day

Welcome to your project! On arrival, you will be picked up by a local staff/volunteer and taken to your accommodation to rest. You must have had a long journey, and you're best prepared for the orientation the next day!

You will undergo an orientation on your intercultural experience ahead. The orientation includes introduction of organization, intercultural learning and cross cultural orientation, managing hopes and concerns, basic Bahasa Indonesia, rules and regulations, and emergency procedures. You will also be briefed about your volunteering project by the project staff. At the end of the day, you will depart to your project location and meet your host family.

On your first day, there will be an induction, and then the volunteering activities will commence. You will be acquainted with how the organization works, and the tasks you have to handle as a volunteer. You may be given administrative duties in the library, assist in workshops, or work in the permaculture garden.

During your free time and weekends, you are free to explore the area and experience the local culture as you wish! Take in the sights of the grand Mount Semeru, check out the Tumpak Sewu waterfall, or take morning treks that lead to picturesque caves near the project site.

On a monthly basis, you will have a 1 to 2-hour session with fellow volunteers and staff to discuss your experience so far, and how to move forward with your current situation.

Before your departure home, you will have an end-of-stay orientation to reflect on your experiences and how it affects your perspective.
