Help women from vulnerable areas in Nicaragua access better opportunities in life by providing them with new skills and tools to achieve success.
This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Our main goal in this program is helping Nicaraguan women and young mothers get empowered by giving them important tools and education, always in a more personalised way so that they're helped to develop their skills and reinforce their knowledge.
Many of the women that come to this program come from very vulnerable places in Nicaragua, having little to none education. That is why, the education volunteers help provide these women is extremely valuable and impacting in the lives of these women. Many of these women have also had to face significant hardships, such as facing misogyny and domestic violence, which is why even simple details like spending time with them, sharing special moments, talking and giving your affection can also really improve their lives, self esteem, and general well being.
As a volunteer, you may perform tasks such as carrying out training workshops, giving classes (in topics like English, Spanish, math, and others), carrying out reading activities, organising workshops about job opportunities and business development (e.g. the use of new technologies, job-searching tools, writing resumes...), creating awareness on topics like gender equality, women's rights, family planning, and sexual education, participating and creating cultural exchange programs, teaching women to use technology (such as computers, writing emails, office..), among many other things.
All of these tasks help women open their minds and acquire a wide skill set that will help them gain more opportunities and achieve their dreams. The purpose of these activities is also creating environments where women feel comfortable and safe, so that they can feel empowered to face the difficulties they have.
Volunteers work on weekdays (Monday through Friday) on two shifts: the morning shift, that lasts from 10:00 to 12:00, and the afternoon shift, that lasts from 13:00 to 17:00.
On weekends, volunteers are free to go discover everything that Nicaragua has to offer.
Nicaragua is a diverse and interesting country with a rich culture and a lot of beautiful sights you cannot miss!
Some of the places that we recommend you to visit during your volunteering experience are:
- Granada: The city where you will be volunteering at, it's a small but exotic place filled with beautiful landscapes, colonial buildings, and warm people. It's located near the most beautiful beaches of the Pacific, as well as the Mombacho volcano, the Cocibolca lake, and other remarkable places to visit.
- Mombacho volcano: An extinct volcano south of Granada, it's a national park where you can hike through a tropical forest filled with a wide array of local flora and fauna to reach the volcano's crater. The park also has a museum, where you can understand more about the area, its history, and the species that inhabit it.
- Zapatera island: one of the largest and most scenic islands within the Archipiélago de Zapatera national park, it's a very scenic place where you can see the Zapatera lagoon, a small lagoon formed in the crater of an ancient extinct volcano. At this park, you can enjoy nature with trekking, fishing, and excursions through archaeological and wooden areas.
- Ometepe: an island created by volcanic activity in one of Central America's largest lakes, it's a unique place known for having two volcanoes in its center. This place is perfect for any lover of outdoor adventures, nature, climbing, or trekking.
- León: a city filled with culture and history, where you can experience local traditions and understand Nicaragua better. It's also a great place for sandboarding, a sport done in the black ashes of the nearby Cerro Negro volcano.
