Nepal Friendship Society is a non-political, non-governmental, non-profit organization officially registered under the social act with the district administration office of Chitwan and also affiliated to the social welfare council (SWC) Nepal.

Let's help poor and underprivileged children! We need a small team comprised of 3-5 English speaking members each pairing with Nepal Friendship Society members, who will teach English to these underprivileged children who can't afford any private education. They are often also lonely and not properly taken care of by their parents, so the Nepal Friendship Society learning center provides cover and a certain protection to them after their school hours.

Program objectives

The program objectives are met through each child's individual educational plan. These plans are based on a series of learning objectives. The learning objectives include all areas of normal development from seven to ten years of age, for example:

  • betterment of community through education
  • support for poor/deprived/marginalized students
  • basic skills
  • pre-academic skills
  • academic readiness

The role of the volunteer

  • You are going to teach English in a governmental school of Nepal. The teaching hours will be fixed during meetings with the school administration.
  • Your own interests as well as experience will help you for your performance in class.
  • You motivate the students to be more creative. You will be a change maker on a local level.
  • You will teach from Sunday to Friday except for Saturday and public holidays.

Volunteering with Nepal Friendship Society gives you the opportunity to learn a lot about the Nepalese way of live. You will live a true cultural experience as you are living in direct contact with the local people. Your time and contribution can make a big difference in our community, so don't miss the opportunity to volunteer with us!

Things you could bring that will be useful for our organization

We would be very grateful for educational books (grammar, science, etc.), illustrated books, English novels and children's books. Also very much appreciated are donations of clothes, art supplies, and stationery.

Gifts and souvenirs you could bring to your host family

The Nepali people are very friendly, and they often give gifts to the volunteer on the day of their departure. If you would like to bring gifts for your family as well, below are some suggestions

  • a small photo album with pictures of you and your family/ friends from home
  • posters, stickers or magazine pictures from your country
  • children's books
  • t-shirts from your country
  • flags

Things to pack

This will vary depending on what non-information activities you want to participate in (trekking, white water rafting, etc.) and how much you need to be comfortable during your placement. With the exception of medicine, first-aid-kit and high-tech trekking gear, you can buy everything that you would need for your placement in Chitwan (likely cheaper than in your home country). Here are a few suggestions:

  • sleeping bag
  • hiking boots
  • fleece jacket (during winter months)
  • light-weight cotton clothing
  • waterproof jacket
  • mosquito repellent
  • sun cream
  • water purification tablets and/or good quality water purifier
  • first aid kit
  • flashlight (torch light)
  • books about your country
  • photos of your family/ friends/ home
