What´s the role of our volunteers?
No previous teaching experience is required. All you need is to be creative and proactive. We will help you settle into a role that will be beneficial to the children you work with, while gaining valuable skills yourself.
What we expect from our volunteers? Who are we looking for?
Anyone who is interested in sustainable development aid and African culture is most welcome :) You should be open-minded to a new culture, able to adapt to society, have fun in dealing with people, and understand when things go slower or differently than in your home country. ,We expect our volunteers to be open-minded towards and confront equals to a foreign country whose culture and habits are all Mozambicans. Mozambique is a developing country in many areas, which makes it necessary to understand some of the circumstances, such as power outages, long waiting times, etc. Parts of the country are very poor, which sometimes asks you for money or work, or you want to sell something to you. You should treat people with respect and cordiality, be helpful, but also be able to show limits.
Despite the many social ills - Mozambique is, in our opinion - one of the most peaceful and warmhearted countries in Africa. In addition, it should be understood that you treat the house as your own and the people you live and work with treat as you would like to be treated - with respect, dignity and decency. We have nothing against boisterous parties and barbecues, but it is very important that everyone knows his own limit and can take care of himself.
Your accommodation?
No special equipment is required. The house is located 200 meters from the beach, not far from the central market, the Baobab Backpackers and the diving center. The schools are about 15km outside the village in the rural areas. A small bus or a tuk-tuk brings you daily from the house to the project site in the morning and in the afternoon. The house is modernly furnished (shower, toilet, AC, fully equipped kitchen) and is located in a protected and safe environment in the midst of local families. Your home for your stay will be a beautiful newly built house with a huge garden leading directly down onto the beach.
The house is in downtown Vilanculos and has a ground floor consisting of 4 rooms with air conditioning, windows, closets and ample space. Each room is equipped for 2-6 people. The bathrooms are new and very modern. The second floor is still under construction, but is intended to reflect the ground floor. The garden covers about 2 hectares and has hammocks, a barbecue area and plenty of space to let your mind wander under the coconut palms, rest or dance around to African drums. Our office with contact persons – if you need help – is also located there. We have WIFI, our own kitchen, and security staff. Just a 2-minute walk through our garden and you will reach the sea!
We offer you a selection of breakfast and dinner – from bread, cheese, fruits, sausage, jams and cereals in the morning to fish, meat, salads and local dishes in the evening. For lunch you can take a sandwich with you, as you will spend the day at one of the project sites. If you want to cook and buy something for yourself, you can reach the market of Vilanculos in about 10 minutes on foot – it is very cheap! If you are allergic to anything, please let us know about the application form.
What our volunteers can expect from us?
We will give you all the necessary information before starting the "Mozambique Adventure" and will help you with advice and assistance to plan your stay as well as possible and to give you the feeling of security even before you leave. After accepting your application we send you different Skype-Dates, during which we talk in detail (about 1 hour) about your adventure and we will answer all your questions. We assure you transparency and honesty about our financial flows. Once you are there, you will see that the help and money will arrive where needed and that you will become true development workers at the end of your stay. Vado and his team are your contacts - on site and around the clock! We work exclusively with the manpower and personnel we have trained to develop and empower the local population.
Why volunteering in Mozambique?
Volunteering in Mozambique is the best way to spend time abroad, to gain life experience, to learn about other cultures and to get to know locals and other volunteers from all over the world to make friends for a lifetime. You will help others and you´ll use your own knowledge and abilities to reduce social injustices. By volunteering in Mozambique you can participate in development to encourage a non- privileged country on their way to economic and social strength. It will change your life because there are not many places on our Planet Earth where contrasts are so close: black & white, wealth and poverty, justice and injustice, love and hate, corruption and fairness, civilization and wilderness.
Mozambique remains untouched by mass tourism. Bazaruto is the only underwater national park in Mozambique – untouched nature, kilometers of deserted beaches, intact sea life with prosperous coral gardens and extremely friendly local people. Take a chance and explore the most incredible and the most beautiful corner of the globe and make discoveries that will last a lifetime. If you are looking for a very special destination untouched by mass tourism, you have found what you are looking for right here on the coast of Mozambique.
During the week (Mon- Fri) you will be picked up between 7:00 am- 7:30 am from the house by car or tuk/tuk. The car will drive you to our local school, which is about 10 km outside Vilanculos. There are more than 600 children who await you. At school, more than 600 children between the ages of 5 and 15 are waiting for you. The approximately 15 teachers need your help in just about every subject - math, English, physics, biology, sports. Of course you can teach in the subject you like the most! During the lessons, you help the children in small groups understand the teaching material and give tutoring lessons. During the breaks, you just spend time with the kids. You will see that they will quickly look to you as role models, learn from you and spend time with you.
The car will give you a ride back between 3:00 – 4:00pm. The rest of the day is free time to explore and engage in the numerous activities in and around Vilanculos. We will have a barbecue twice a week at the house, and every Saturday we will do a trip together to one of the sightseeing spots.
Bazaruto
Bazaruto, is THE paradise in terms of beaches. You will find miles on miles of beaches, as white as the snow – and above all, empty and deserted.
Diving & snorkeling
It doesn´t matter if you are an experienced diver or if you start exploring the underwater world by doing your Open PADI during your stay with us. In many travel agencies and websites you will read about Mozambique´s unique diving spots, declared as one of the best spots in the world! The surrounding, the clearness of the water and the variety of species ensures divers come back year after year. Come and experience it for yourself – an exceptional underwater world awaits you!
Kite Surfing and Beach Volleyball
A mere 5 minutes’ walk from the house is the kite school. The amazing colours of the ocean, the shallow water which runs hundreds of meters along the coastline and the upcoming wind in the afternoon, make Vilanculos a famous kite surf spot.
Red Dunes
Around 15 kilometers North of Vilanculos are the so-called “Red Dunes”. Particularly special at sunset, the sand dives into a deep, shining brown, the sea becomes dark and the palm trees at your feet shimmer in strong green. It seems as if there is an endless savanna in front of you where all kinds of wild animals roam. And that’s where they were; before the Civil War. There are currently a few conservation and wildlife projects that are bringing the animals back to the vast valleys of Mozambique.
Horseback riding
Enjoy riding by horseback in a small group through palm plantations, into beautiful savannas and up to the hills where the most amazing views over Barazuto´s archipelago can be experienced, before heading to the seaside to ride on almost empty beaches with the most amazing turquoise waters.
Local fishing
Local fishing is one of the best experiences. With the absence of luxury, you will be able to see first hand the struggle for survival – witness the purity and the simplicity of the Mozambicans catching their livelihood with dirt, humor, confidence and strong will. This experience brings you so much closer to the culture and history of the people of Mozambique than any other activity. The people of Vilanculos have been fishing for their livelihood for centuries. This is not ‘fishing’ with long-distance, high-tech fishing boats. Fishing in Vilanculos is done the old fashioned way, the natural way, using physical strength, patience and talent, on a small, original dhow boat without motor or technology.
Trips north and south:
South: world famous Tofo Beach, with its small, layed back market, where people plan to stay 2 days and end up for weeks.
North: About 170km northwest of Beira, a 10h drive of Vilanculos, is Gorongosa National Park, which was gazetted in 1960 and soon made headlines as one of Southern Africa’s premier wildlife parks. Booking can be arranged on demand.
Kululeku works as an association in Germany and as a NGO in Mozambique not profit-oriented. All proceeds and donations (after deduction of our costs) go towards the social projects and the Mozambican community.
Sustainable development assistance can be a very costly project that unfortunately does not allow us to reward social work. We also do not receive any compensation for our services rendered. The running costs of the accommodation, catering, transport, etc. need to be covered for the duration of your stay. These must be borne in large part by our volunteers as they can not be fully funded through our donations.
