You don’t even need to speak the local language where you are volunteering. The program is open to all volunteers whether you are on a gap year, at university or wanting a career break.
All we require is a good standard of spoken English. You will find a warm welcome awaits you from our students around the world. Often the local teachers are very capable of teaching the structural aspects of the English language - such as the grammar - but do not use the correct intonation or pronunciation, because they lack the confidence of a native speaker. By providing conversational English teaching, you can greatly enhance the learning experience and the future prospects of thousands of children and adults with whom we work in the developing world.
Often you will find that all you have is a blackboard and a piece of chalk in the classroom. Fortunately, the main resource you have is yourself. The students will want to find out about you. They will want to know why you have chosen to come and teach in a school in India or a university in Mexico. Lots of the lessons will give you the opportunity to explain about where you live or your interests and hobbies at home.
Before you leave we will send you a comprehensive teaching guide with ideas, teaching games and advice. It includes tried and tested teaching resources, and takes you through beginner and intermediate lessons. Before you know it your great lesson plan will be being repeated in classrooms across the city where you are based.
Teaching project suppliesPicture books, instruments, art, music, or other teaching materials related to your subject., Pens, pencils, notemakers, colur pens, novels, games, stickers, cryons, exercise books, story books, chalk, white board markers,
Usually you will teach about 16 hours of conversational English lessons per week. You will also need to take time to prepare your lessons, and correct your students’ work. Many volunteers choose to help out in other areas too, helping students with extra-curricular activities like sports, drama or music lessons for example.
Accra has developed a fairly western social scene in the recent
years, mainly because of the large expatriate community in the city. On
Friday night, singing karaoke in the champs sports bar at the Paloma
Hotel, you would be forgiven for thinking you’d stepped back into
Europe. And this has its place-after a month living in the village, a
cocktail and some fluent English conversation can be just what you
need.
There are some great deal of bars in Accra with much more feel, and much
more opportunity to interact with Ghanaians, one popular place with
volunteers is ’By well’ at the southern end of Osu Oxford street, where
the house band plays every Thursday evening. Cape coast also has good
bars, ‘Oasis’ on the beach near the Castle is popular and sometimes has
impressive live drumming and dancing shows.
Spot bars are usually relatively inexpensive, and the sorts of places
local people to for their beer after work. Learning some Twi or Ewe and
some Ga from the locals as the sun goes down and sip an ice-cold star or
club beer can be a great and very cheap evening out. Labadi beach is
also a place where volunteers go swimming and horse riding.
Ghana being a safari destination for tourists, our program has
established links to various destinations for our volunteers. Volunteers
have the opportunity to visit the famous Kakum canopy walk, Tafi Atome
monkey sanctuary, Wli water falls, Cape Coast castle and the Mole
national park.
