Environmental Interns participate in environment conservation, revitalization, and other community projects This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+

Rieko Kenya is a not-for-profit organization first established as a community-based organization in the year 2007 before acquiring its NGO registration status in 2010.  The organization’s goal is to alleviate poverty and to amplify the voice of the disadvantaged and “poor” communities in Kenya.

Tree cover in Migori County especially in Nyatike Sub-county where Rieko Kenya works is less than 1% (Migori District statistics office, 2010) against government requirement of 10%. The district development plan prioritizes environmental conservation and protection as a key priority. Poverty has pushed the community to embark on cutting of trees for charcoal burning and sell firewood to fishmongers and the local populace.
The overwhelming growing populations along Community Lake beaches continue to eliminate the natural bushes, leaving almost the whole parcels of land bare. Furthermore, high levels of poverty and inadequate livelihood options for the local community leads to over-dependence on natural resources and land degradation. The poverty level in Migori County is 58% against the national one of 45.9% (Migori District Environment Action Plan 2009-2013.

The water points have since dried up in the community. The community is experiencing climate change characterized by erratic and unreliable rainfall. Women spend lots of time of about 4- 5 hours looking for clean and safe water from neighboring communities. Furthermore, Lake Victoria which is the major source of water is not only far away from most of the residents but continues to pose health threat. The extent to which the farmlands are being eroded has caused unimaginable siltation into Lake Victoria.
The brunt of harsh nature has been left mainly to the women to feed their families. The local populace mainly uses traditional 3 stoned jikos (stoves), which consumes a lot of fuelwood, further increasing the pressure on the already deforested indigenous trees and perpetuating poverty.

Our environmental volunteer/intern programs aim to address the myriad issues mentioned above through our work. We offer several types of placements for our environment interns, including Tree Planting, Water Sterilization, and Recycle and Clean Up. We recommend our volunteers stay for a minimum of 1 month, but are welcome to stay as long as they'd like according to their availability. We are happy to discuss what options are best for you.

1. Tree Planting and School Farming

Tree planting interns partake in providing tree seedlings to families in Migori County. Tree planting is for environmental conservation, and also provides a means of income for families. In schools, interns also have a chance to work with the local 4K clubs on the school gardens.

2. Water Sterilization
Water sterilization interns will work with the community to purify water for households in Migori County. Many families get their water from the River Migori- women and children walking many hours a day to fetch water. As a water intern, you can also partake in water and sanitation education, assisting with the construction of water filters, and borehole creation (depending on when you arrive). We are happy to discuss with you our current water projects.

3. Recycle and Clean Up & Environmental Education
Rieko’s clean and recycle volunteering program in Kenya is an ecotourism way in which to explore Africa. We all know back at home how important is to recycle and live in a clean environment, however here in Kenya, people are yet to see the positive impacts. The scope of environmental education is huge and therefore this is why this program allows you free reign to make whichever impact you see fit. This could include how to save on fuel usage, care for the environment, and reduce degradation. Research and design your own campaign, and then deliver it to the local community. Rieko staff and local community health workers will be on hand to assist; however, the leadership of the program is down to you!

For all of our programs, we encourage our volunteers to take an active role in directing activities, however local support and expertise will be provided for you throughout your stay in Kenya. You are not required to bring equipment for planting or farming, all equipment will be provided for you here. You are welcome to bring additional materials if you feel they would enhance your teaching experience.

Typical day

Your day to day activities will vary depending on the nature of your project, and your interests in the area. We recommend our Environment volunteers visit some of our other projects to be able to see the full scope of our work and to get to know the local community better.

Typical working days are from Monday to Friday as from 8 a.m to 4 p.m.

Free-time activities

Migori County has beautiful natural areas, with the shores of Lake Victoria close by and many nature hikes in the region. Travel to neighboring areas of Kenya, some of Kenya's many national parks, or to our close beaches can be easily coordinated. These make for great weekend excursions. We are happy to discuss more of these with you.
