There is only one flight a day from Medan to Simeulue at 12:35, so it is crucial that volunteers either arrive with plenty of time to spare in the morning, or stay a night in Medan. There is a nice and very convenient hotel right in the airport. The return flight to Simeulue from Medan is included in the volunteer program price. Pick up and drop off volunteers at Simeulue airport and all travel on Simeulue is included in the program fee as well. The trip from Simeulue to Bangkaru is provided. However, do keep in mind that it consists of an overnight ferry to the mainland, followed by a 4-hour speed boat to the island. On the ferry, a comfortable dorm is provided, and volunteers often sleep for the duration of the journey. The speedboat ride is on a local boat with no shade. It is therefore important to bring cloths to cover up and plenty of sun cream!
The accommodation on Simeulue is surrounded by jungle and fronted by a white sandy beach. Volunteers are accommodated in dormitory-style rooms with basic amenities and can expect to share a room with one to two other volunteers. You are requested to help conserve water, as resources are sparse during dry season. This is real jungle living, and although the camp has some facilities, the toilet and washing facilities are very basic and may be challenging for some.
