Immerse yourself in the vibrant scene of Balinese cultural hub and share your love of reading with local children. This volunteer program is especially suitable for:
Age 18+
This volunteering trip to Bali places you in a library in Ubud that’s home to over 30,000 books – along with a wealth of learning opportunities for its community.

You’ll join an informal educational project that lays on intensive lessons in Balinese dance and gamelan music, learning and playing alongside local people who are passionate about preserving their craft. Help the library by organising after-school reading events and teaching English (or your native language) in an informal setting.

Throughout this Bali cultural volunteering trip, you’ll stay in modest housing in the library – a great opportunity to meet the community you’re helping. You’ll also get a full-day orientation and a Bahasa Indonesia language lesson. Immersing yourself in Balinese culture goes beyond volunteering, too. You can participate in local traditions, such as making offerings, visiting temples and exploring markets to learn the history and mythology behind the artwork there. And all against the backdrop of beaches and rainforests that Bali is famous for.

Typical day

Welcome to your project! On arrival, you will be picked up by a local staff/volunteer and taken to your accommodation to rest. You must have had a long journey, and you're best prepared for the orientation the next day!

You will undergo an orientation on your intercultural experience ahead. The orientation includes introduction of organization, managing hopes and concerns, basic Bahasa Indonesia, rules and regulations, and emergency procedures. You will also be briefed about your volunteering project by its staff. At the end of the day, you will depart to your project location and be transferred to your on-site accommodation.

On your first day, there will be an induction, and then the volunteering activities will commence. You will take part in the traditional music and dance lessons, as well as help out in the community library. You may assist in administrative duties or organizing extra-curricular activities for local kids in the area.

During your free time and weekends, you are free to explore the area and experience the local culture as you wish!

In the middle of your program, you will have a 1 to 2-hour session with fellow volunteers and staff to discuss your experience so far, and how to move forward with your current situation.

Before your departure home, you will have an end-of-stay orientation to reflect on your experiences and how it affects your perspective.

Free-time activities

In between the volunteer work, participants can enjoy immersion activities to explore the beautifully captivating Bali. Learn more about the rich and vibrant Balinese culture by spending time with the locals. Discover the local history and mythology in their arts and souvenirs, which can be found in the local markets. During the downtime, volunteers can unwind at one of the sprawling, pristine beaches or lush rainforests that the island has to offer.
