As Arts facilitator your main responsability will be to help preparing and running different art and craft projects with the kids at our shelter Mamas Place.

Our dear friend Luc van der Walt also implemented his amazing Flowers for Africa Workshops into this community, volunteers help to continue doing these workshops with the kids:

‚Flowers for Africa‘ is a 5 days workshop initiated by the artist Luc and the non-profit organisation ‚Art to uplift‘ which provides underprivileged children with the therapeutic experience of art.  With a group of artists, the children are painting flowers bigger than themselves on the murals of their communities. The children are left proud, educated and more confident in themselves and the community is inspired to make other improvements. Before the workshop you help to organize paints and brushes. During the workshop you help and direct the children. On the last day you will help to take a picture of each child with their flower.

In the week after the project you print out lots of photos and organize a ceremony to celebrate the success of the workshop together with the community leaders. The ceremonies include dancing, music and theatre performences performed by the kids and a diashow with photos of the project. The main purpose of the ceremony is to hand out a certificate with a photo of each child with their painted flower. It is a beautifull event that will stay in your mind and heart forever!

Are you adventurous, social, naturally curious and creative and looking to gift some of your time and effort to a South-African community project with underprivileged (kick-ass and hilariously funny) kids, then this might be just the opportunity you were waiting for. Our projects are perfect for anyone looking to expand their mind and learn some new skills.

Typical day

The volunteers are accommodated in a nice guesthouse in Port Elizabeth and are working with the kids and facilitators in the township 5-6 hours daily from Monday to Friday.

After breakfast in the morning, you can relax in the garden, go for a swim in the river, go surfing, go to the beach, go for a hike or take a SUP on the river.

Around 1pm ur project initiator Luc takes you to the township Motherwell.

You will mainly do the Art Projects and also help out with our Community Upliftment Projects. Us and the volunteers work closely together with the locals of the township Motherwell, who want to improve life in the township and ensure a better future for their children:

·       we organize afterschool activities like sports, arts, planting, practising English, playing games and environmental activities

·       we help out at a kids soup kitchen run by Nwabisa, the 'Mama' of the neighbourhood

·       we beautify the area together with the locals

·       we organize events in parks, where kids can do art, dance, music and theatre performances

·       we help out at a preschool in the township

Around 6pm you go back to your lovely accommodation and enjoy the amazing vibe on our terrasse at the river or at our fireplace together with the other volunteers and project facilitators. Usually the project facilitators cook together with the volunteers a Pojke or another healthy meal. We offer fresh veggies, rice and noodles for you to use. The dinner is always a nice way to reflect the day and have some beers together.
