The nonprofit organization that runs this volunteer project in Chile has been founded in 2004. Its main objective is to fight for the conservation of the forests of Patagonia. The integration of the surrounding communities is very important. The communities shalld learn to live by and with nature instead of destroying it. It also aims to improve the quality of life of the community members, as they have secure jobs and income through work in the organization. The organization runs various projects to protect nature and especially its inhabitants.
Of particular importance in this project is the Huemul, a native rare deer species that was formerly widespread in Chile. The organization has launched a huemul conservation program (resettlement and reproduction), and in the nearly ten years that this program exists, the stock of only a few huuls has been increased to just under 20 animals. This may sound little, but is a great success for the project. Guanacos have recently been protected, bred and reintroduced into their natural habitat.
In addition, the organization runs an ecotourism project, with which it operates not only an exceptional and very successful boutique hotel but also guesthouses and a campsite. Sustainable tourism is an important source of income for permanently employing the 40 or so employees aged 19 to 45 years.
The work of recent years has borne fruit. This has also been recognized by National Geographic, and in 2015 the organization ranked first in the "World Legacy Award" (under the heading "Conserving the Natural World"). According to the organizers, 150 participants from 56 countries from six different continents participated. So a really remarkable award! This award confirms how important the project is and how unique is the opportunity to volunteer in Chile.
Note: The tasks may vary. They depend on factors such as number of
volunteers, weather, season, current needs of the project, as well as
self-motivation. Not every volunteer may be fully involved in all these
tasks.
