Volunteering is a fantastic way to travel abroad, give back to people who are in need and develop yourself as a person.

"Just like moons and like suns,
With the certainty of tides,
Just like hopes springing high,

Still I'll rise."-Maya Angelou

What is it?: Working one to one online, mentoring gifted girls aged 13+ who have been specially chosen for the leadership academy. Volunteers will work directly with the girls remotely to help them on 3 main areas weekly:
  • Academic support i.e help with homework, revision, exam practice (academic empowerment)
  • Self esteem and goal setting (empowerment)
  • Social and community issues (global awareness)
  • Check in with me once a week via video call
  • Document each session with the girls on a shared drive
Who is it for?: Ideally women who can work as mentors (males would unlikely to be suitable due to safeguarding issues, cultural issues here in Tanzania, parents likely to decline daughters involvement working 1-1 with a male mentor).

Time commitment: Part time flexible (e.g roughly 2 hours 3 days a week), as the girls are attending school. We will work with you to schedule your sessions and connect with your girls and.

The experience you will get from giving up your time and care for others, will be like no other. You WILL make a huge difference and uplift those around you, as long as you stay motivated on your mission, positive and focused

The Problem

These young girls have hopes and dreams like any group of young girls around the world, the differences being not having the basic privileges others enjoy such as high quality education, stable homes or direct access to career opportunities. At times they are forced to put their dreams aside in order to survive harsh and cruel living situations that provide them no opportunity to progress and become independent. Many become pregnant at a young age with no family or community support, which often leads to abandoned or orphaned babies. This is problem that affects the entire community and local Tanzanian are leading the way to find solutions.

We're aiming to combat three main issues through mentorship to ensure they're SELF empowered to achieve:

  • Low self esteem and lack of self confidence
  • Lack of empowerment
  • Not having the skills to set goals

Our Solution

"It takes a village..."-African Proverb

Teenage girls in Arusha, Tanzania are perhaps one of the most vulnerable and impressionable in society. They are at high risk of exploitation, abuse, unwanted pregnancies and a long list of other depressing fates. They are also the least likely to be heard, the least likely to be listened to and understood. Many of these girls are looked over and overshadowed, no one asking them who they want to be, what they think or if they need help.

This new generation of girls don't just want to be told what they can have  or who they should be. But want the opportunity to figure it out, to discover themselves without interruption and to be bold in their individualities. And yet, they float quietly through the community unheard, silent in submission to their environment.

The Siret Girls Leadership Academy is a small step towards opportunity for the girls in Arusha. Working together with schools in Arusha, Tanzania and parents of  teenage girls we will aim to empower the girls to become self determined go getters and change makers. Working with a qualified educator who knows his community needs, we identified 25 girls aged between 13 years old and 18 years old who are facing hardship but are fiercely motivated to succeed. With their parents' blessings, they have joined us on a mission to make a difference and inspire them.

Your main objectives will be:

  • Support our foundation to provide consistent mentorship to the girls
  • Raising the girls level of self esteem and helping them recognise their own importance,

If the girls do not recognise their own significance and worth, it will be difficult to help them self empower. Each session will include a confidence raising exercise and each girl will be given an opportunity to be recognised as an individual.

*Helping their girls clearly identify their immediate and future goals

We all have aspirations and dreams. Regardless of what those are, the girls will be encouraged to create a vision and set their sights on their goals for present and the future.

*Giving the girls tools to actualise their immediate and future goals.

The girls will be expected to finish the program with leadership skills including the ability to proactively work towards their goals. They will be given key skills for realising these goals that will stay with them as they go through womanhood
