Conduct workshops to create public awareness on basic hygiene routines practices such as handwashing and toothbrushing, can prevent disease. You could also take part in research into access to water in Kampong Cham. As an intern you can research on healthcare topics such as the prevention of dengue fever, medical treatment, and how the health of communities may be affected by access to water.

Another main focus of this program is leading English lessons to improve education in the local community and schools. By working closely with our local partners, Buddhism for Social Development Action, BSDA, Centre for Foreign Languages, the Organisation for Basic Training, OBT, and the Kampong Cham community, you will also be contributing toward UN SDG #17, Partnerships for the Goals.

Our interns live and work with GVI staff, interns, and other volunteers, in the community of Kampong Cham, a bustling riverside town with a relaxed, friendly charm, located approximately three hours from the Cambodian capital of Phnom Penh. Expect a busy day-to-day, including full days teaching, planning and preparing for lessons and workshops, as well as a minimum of two hours of training each week. You will work anywhere from the sprawling temple complex, including ancient sculpture and bas-reliefs, and gilded pagodas, in which local Buddhist monks are taught, to the drop-in educational facility in town centre, to our classroom situated amongst one of the most ancient and magnificent temples in Cambodia. On the weekends travel and explore the surrounding area, travel to Phnom Penh to see the royal palace or to Siem Reap to see the ever-popular Angkor Wat.

This program includes the ILM Endorsed Leadership program, designed to develop your leadership skills and put you a step above other candidates. This program will be completed during your first 12 weeks on the base with GVI staff and other participants. Each week you will learn about a specific concept related to leadership and teamwork and complete an assignment on the topic. You will be guided through the process by your assigned mentor on base. At the end of the course, successful candidates will receive a certificate and personal recommendation.

Typical day

- Mondays to Fridays will be spent working with some of the most marginalized members of the Kampong Cham community and supporting them to learn English as well as running workshops to raise awareness on basic hygiene and healthcare practices

- The exact projects that we get involved in will depend on the needs of the community at that exact time, and as such, participants should be prepared to be flexible and adapt to changes in the field.

- As an intern you will have weekly mentor meetings and reflection sessions, you will also complete an internship project

Free-time activities

Spend your evenings cycling along the magnificent Mekong river and round the neighboring islands of Koh Penh and Koh Thmey or pick up freshly made coconut pancakes along the bustling riverside promenade. On weekends practice the art of getting lost in the splendor of Kampong Cham’s rural beauty with its many medieval temples and stunning mosques.

If you can travel further afield visit the capital city of Phnom Penh to enjoy the electric atmosphere of the bustling riverside, visit the sprawling markets or immerse yourself in the history of the Khmer Rouge with its sights and museums. Travel south down to the many spectacular islands off the Southern tip of Cambodia where you can spend the weekend island hoping to enjoy the stunning beaches, trek through uninhabited jungle or practice your snorkeling and explore the underwater world. Travel north and you will find the 12th century temple ruins from the Khmer Empire, the famous Angkor Wat.
